Two dead in three-vehicle Trego County accident

fatal crashWAKEENEY — Two people were killed in a Monday accident on Interstate 70 in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Pontiac passenger car driven by John Louis Smith, 17, Ottawa, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70, approximately 1 mile east of the Ogallah exit.

The driver lost control of the vehicle. It crossed the median and entered the westbound lanes and hit a 2007 Kenworth semi driven by Dennis E. Bowers, 49, Cardington, Ohio, and a 2014 Nissan driven by Kevin K. Werner, 54, Derby.

Smith and a passenger in the Pontiac, Alexis Woolsoncroft, 12, Ottawa, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Another passenger in the Pontiac, Alejandra Gutierrez-Pino, 17, Ottawa, was transported to Hays Medical Center.

Bowers and Werner were transported to Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. Bowers later was transferred to HaysMed.

The KHP reported all were properly restrained at the time of the accident.
