LUCAS — An investigation into a fatal accident in Lucas is underway. A city employee working on power lines was injured and transported to the Russell County Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, where he later died.

“We have reached out to the Department of Labor to investigate this accident,” said Lucas Mayor Jennifer Bates. “We have had a tragic accident involving one of our city employees, and it resulted in a death. The coroner is working to determine the cause of death.”

The accident happened on South Wolf Street in Lucas. The coroner’s report is expected sometime Thursday, and the Department of Labor investigation could take weeks.

“We are a close-knit community,” Bates said. “The life that was lost was not only a city employee but also a valuable member of our community. We are all devastated.”
