Kansas man crashes, dies during police chase

EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) — An eastern Kansas man is dead after crashing his car into a power pole while fleeing from Emporia police.

police chaseThe Topeka Capital-Journal reports 20-year-old Javier Escobedo of Emporia tried to elude officers who attempted to pull him over around 2:30 a.m. Sunday for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Police say Escobedo wasn’t wearing a seat belt when his 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier slammed into the pole. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:14 a.m.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
