SALINA — If someone comes to your home and claims they can reduce electrical bills by entering codes into a cable tv box, it’s a scam.
Salina Police Captain Mike Sweeney said a 62-year-old woman lost $220 in cash, when a Hispanic man driving a truck with Westar Energy logos and wearing what looked like a Westar employee badge stopped at her home the evening of June 20.
The woman described the man as being tall, average build, a round face, wearing an orange shirt and blue jeans. The man spoke fluent Spanish and told the woman he would put a code into her cable box with an electrical device and would also point the device at a transformer behind her home, which would reduce her electrical bills.
The man also said she would not have to pay an electric bill for three months.
The woman gave the man $220 in cash, but after becoming suspicious, called Westar and found out she had been scammed. She notified police of the incident Thursday.
