LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Lawrence Police Chief Tarik Khatib hopes to convince residents the department needs a $30 million new headquarters.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports voters in November likely will be asked to approve a tax increase to fund the new building, which would bring the entire department and equipment under one roof.

Khatib says one of the problems with the current facilities is that the city’s armored vehicle has to be stored a few miles away in a garage without a security system. He says that means it would take 40 minutes for the vehicle to respond to an emergency, like a school shooting, when it should take 10 minutes or less.

Khatib says the facility’s problems also include leaking roofs, worn-out flooring, storage problems and personnel spread out over the city.
