Maintenance is cause of water dump in north Hays

A large amount of water was dumped yesterday north of Interstate 70 in Hays near Sunflower Bank.  It happened during the prohibited outdoor watering hours, leaving some citizens wondering.

According to Assistant City Manager Paul Briseno, due to abnormal weather conditions, the water levels in the north water tower needed to be lowered in order to retain an optimal balance.

City departments were contacted to see if the excess could be used, but due to time restraints, the city was forced to “overflow” the water in the area along north Vine Street.

“Essentially, it’s simply routine maintenance,” Briseno said. “The need to reduce the tower’s capacity and balance the system took priority.”

According to Briseno, the last time this occurred was in 2010 or 2011 and it is not a very frequent occurrence.
