Huelskamp: I wish throwing money at the VA would solve the problem (VIDEO)

Screen Shot 2014-07-23 at 8.52.42 AMWASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning, Representative Tim Huelskamp (KS-01), a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, appeared on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal to discuss issues and scandals at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Following the broadcast, Congressman Huelskamp issued the following statement:

“As I shared on C-SPAN this morning, I wish it were as easy as throwing money at the massive problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs. But in order to ensure that our brave Veterans receive proper timely care, the problem is far deeper. Scandal after scandal at the VA has documented data manipulation, massive bonuses, irresponsible bureaucrats, and worst of all, Veterans who died because the system failed them.

“The President must get personally involved and step up to address the issues our veterans are facing at his VA—it’s more than just appointing a new Secretary, Mr. President. Real reform at the VA begins with demanding a culture of accountability – not a culture of deception. They must replace the culture of intimidation and retaliation with real leadership that puts Veterans before bonuses and protects brave whistleblowers from retaliation.  Only when both President Obama and his likely new VA Secretary, Mr. McDonald, step up to address these fundamental and systemic failures at the VA can we truly improve the VA system and provide real choices for those Veterans who want and deserve quality care closer to home.

“Rest assured, I will continue to push VA officials and demand quality care and timely access for our Veterans.”

No other information is being released at this time. The investigation continues.

Royals rally for win over White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) – Mike Moustakas scored the tiebreaking run in the top of the ninth inning when White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers could not handle a throw home and the Kansas City Royals beat Chicago 2-1 Wednesday in the rubber game of a three-game series.

Moustakas triggered the decisive rally with a lead-off single off Zach Putnam (3-2), the last of four White Sox pitchers. Alcides Escobar bunted Moustakas over before Nori Aoki flared a single to center field.

Adam Eaton’s strong throw beat Moustakas to the plate, but Flowers lost control of the ball when the runner slid into him. Flowers was charged with an error on the play.

Wade Davis (6-2) pitched a scoreless inning and Greg Holland retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his 26th save.

Senator: VA center begged for surgical equipment

Dole VA Med CenterWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran says a veterans medical center in Wichita left its laboratories unstaffed for entire shifts and sometimes resorted to “begging, borrowing and manipulation” just to obtain vital surgical equipment.

Moran made the allegations in a letter sent last week to Sloan Gibson, the acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affair. The Kansas Republican senator says the problems at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center put veterans’ lives at risk and forced employees to work under conditions of fear and retribution.

Moran cited whistleblower complaints and 177 pages of internal documents, including meeting minutes, budgets and equipment request lists.

The VA medical center Wichita confirmed it had received the letter a day earlier but was still reviewing it Wednesday.

Brownback supports phasing out Kansas energy rule

renewable energyTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Gov. Sam Brownback says he supports phasing out a renewable energy requirement for Kansas utilities over four years and is urging critics of the rule and wind-energy advocates to work on a compromise.

Brownback said Wednesday that he’s backing a four-year phase-out of the requirement. It’s part of a 2009 law.

The law requires utilities to have wind and other renewable sources account for 15 percent of their peak electricity-generating capacity by 2016 and 20 percent by 2020.

The mandate has been targeted by the conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity and the powerful Kansas Chamber of Commerce. But wind-energy advocates have successfully blocked efforts to repeal the rule.

Brownback had an impromptu news conference with reporters, saying the debate’s big players should have talks toward striking a deal.

2 companies moving from Kansas to Missouri

jobsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri has apparently won another round in the continuing border war with Kansas that involves using tax incentives to entice businesses to move across the state line that runs through the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Leawood, Kansas-based Cbiz Inc. and Mayer Hoffman McCann PC have announced plans to move their headquarters and 450 employees to Kansas City, Missouri’s Country Club Plaza next summer.

The Kansas City Star reports the moves come as officials in Missouri and Kansas have been seeking a truce in the border war, in which each state has used tax incentives to lure businesses away from the other.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development says the moves will trigger millions of dollars in potential incentives from Missouri if the companies meet job creation and investment criteria.

FHSU students gain business experience in Barbados

FHSU University Relations

More than just a vacation, over 30 freshmen from Fort Hays State University’s College of Business and Entrepreneurship recently traveled to Barbados to help other young entrepreneurs with their business practices.

“Students not only got to see the country through the eyes of a tourist, they were also immersed in the economic environment and learning the business community as well,” said Dr. Stacey Smith, assistant professor and director of tourism and hospitality management.

The students were part of the college’s learning communities, 4C Innovation and Everybody’s Business. They teamed with the Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Youth Entreneurship — a not-for-profit company whose mission is to help young entrepreneurs acquire the skills, aptitude and attitude needed to become successful and productive individuals.

“The students were able to learn self-worth and gain a different perspective on what is possible for their future,” said Courtney Kanzenbach, Victoria, graduate. “Many students commented that helping these young entrepreneurs made them realize the value of their skills and felt good about being able to apply what they learned from their first year.”

Students worked on a large variety of projects: a fish farm, a catering service, a deli in a local hospital, a modeling agency, an iron fencing manufacturer, an e-waste recycling company, a printer of commercial signs and customized apparel, and several local produce farmers.

“When you look at Fort Hays’ motto — Forward thinking. World ready. — this opportunity gives you direct contact with the world, the world that I didn’t have any prior knowledge about,” said Austin Foster, a Lakewood, Colo., sophomore. “It is putting you into the environment, and I feel like there is no better way to learn about the environment then to be there.”

While some of the students performed manual labor, others built websites, established systems for their entrepreneurs to track costs and inventory, and helped with some preliminary research as to whether expand into a new product line. Students also assisted with the preparation of business plans and helped to establish realistic levels of financing.

“We felt that this was an excellent international opportunity for our students in a way that helps others and provides them with a positive learning experience outside the classroom,” said Angela Walters, assistant professor of informatics. “We were very fortunate to have a donor who believes in our students and provided the funding to make it happen.”

“This was not just a growing experience for the students in their schooling but as young adults,” said Kanzenbach. “For many of them this was their first time traveling internationally. Gaining confidence through experience is empowering and many were nervous at first but by the end of the trip they were talking about other places they would like to travel.”

Along with Smith and Walter, Jessica Heronemus, instructor of accounting, was present on the Barbados trip.
