Western Kan. man sentenced on federal gun charge

The United State’s Attorney’s Office

JailGARDEN CITY, KAN. – A Garden City man was sentenced Monday to 13 years in federal prison on a federal firearms charge, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said.

Anthony J. Reyna, 24, Garden City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm following a felony conviction. In his plea, he admitted that on Nov. 13, 2012, he sold a handgun to an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who was working undercover. The two met near a Home Depot store in Garden City. Because Reyna had a prior felony conviction he was prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm.

Grissom commended the Garden City Police Department, the ATF and Assistant U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch for their work on the case.

Kansas GOP congressional candidates trade barbs UPDATE

Tiahrt and Rep. Pompeo

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The two Republicans vying for the south-central Kansas congressional seat traded barbs at their first face-to-face forum.

Congressman Mike Pompeo told the Wichita Crime Commission on Monday he’s on a mission in Washington to shrink the size and scope of government. He says he believes deeply in the private sector.

Former congressman Todd Tiahrt said he’s challenging Pompeo in the August primary to reclaim his old seat because he cannot sit by and watch all the hard work he did in Washington deteriorate. He cited what he called the “train wreck” in Washington caused by lawmakers who can’t get along with each other.

Tiahrt represented the 4th Congressional District for 16 years before giving it up in 2010 for an unsuccessful campaign for Senate.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The two contenders for the Republican nomination in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District are facing off at their first joint public event.

Congressman Mike Pompeo and his challenger, former Congressman Todd Tiahrt, were scheduled to participate Monday in a political forum hosted by the Wichita Crime Commission.

Pompeo is running for a third term from the Wichita-area district. Tiahrt represented the district for 16 years before giving up the U.S. House seat in 2010 for an unsuccessful run for U.S. Senate.

They’re the only two Republicans vying in the Aug. 5 primary. Perry Schuckman is unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Monday’s forum at a Wichita restaurant was open to Crime Commission members and their guests.

Couple pleads guilty to hiring illegal workers

Court

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The owners of two hotels in the Kansas City area have admitted hiring workers who were in the country illegally and then paying them less than other employees.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says 53-year-old Munir Ahmad Chaudary and his 41-year-old wife, Rhonda R. Bridge, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of conspiracy to harbor undocumented workers for personal gain.

The couple admitted they hired the workers for Clarion hotels they own in Overland Park, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri.

Grissom says the illegal workers were not given Social Security, workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance.

A sentencing date hasn’t been set. They face five years in federal prison without parole and a fine up to $250,000.

Prosecutors also are seeking the forfeiture of assets gained through the couple’s activities.

Kansas man trying to recover truck run over, dies

Police accident crashWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita police say a man who was run over while trying to recover a stolen truck has died.

Police said Monday that 25-year-old Shawn Palmer died Sunday from injuries he suffered over the weekend.

Lt. Randy Reynolds said Palmer and his older brother went to a QuikTrip when they saw their father’s truck was being driven by someone they didn’t know. When the driver tried to flee in the truck, the brothers jumped on but were thrown off.

Reynolds says a trailer being pulled by the truck ran over Shawn Palmer. The older brother was treated and released at a hospital.

The Wichita Eagle reports the pickup and trailer were recovered in a field.

NEA wants Education Sec. Duncan’s resignation

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s largest teachers’ union wants Education Secretary Arne Duncan to quit.

Delegates of the National Education Association adopted a business item July 4 at its annual convention in Denver that called for his resignation. The vote underscores the long-standing tension between the Obama administration and teachers’ unions.

A tipping point for some members was Duncan’s statement last month in support of a California judge’s ruling that struck down tenure and other job protections for the state’s public school teachers. Even before that, teachers’ unions have clashed with the administration over other issues ranging from its support of charter schools to its push to use student test scores as part of evaluating teachers.

Duncan wouldn’t comment Monday to reporters while at a White House event.

Building projects, temporary relocation on Ellis County agenda

The Ellis County Commission is expected to award the bid for the new EMS/Rural Fire building at Monday’s regular meeting.

Commercial Builders of Hays submitted the recommended bid, with a base bid of just less than $3.4 million.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the courthouse and will follow an earlier special meeting to discuss budget issues.

The commission also will consider what to do with employees and services while construction is underway at a variety of building projects. The commission currently is considering leasing space at either the Hadley Center or the former PATH Lab on 13th Street.

In other business, the commission will consider renewing its maintenance contract with Motorola.

Monday’s intense heat not expected to last long

Monday promises to be a steamy one, but the heat wave will be short-lived.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 102 degrees as the day progresses, with the humidity making it feel up to 10 degrees warmer.

A slight chance of thunderstorms is projected tonight as a cooler front pushes into the area. The mercury is expected to drop dramatically this evening, with an overnight low all the way down to 67 degrees.

That drop will make Tuesday much more tolerable. The high temperature Tuesday is projected at 86 degrees, with mostly sunny skies.

The next chance for thunderstorms comes Wednesday night, as the National Weather Service is calling for a 40 percent chance of storms.

Colo. police officer shot this weekend is released from hospital

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — One of two suburban Denver police officers shot over the weekend has been released from the hospital.

Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said Monday that the male officer is back at home. A female officer who was also wounded on Saturday night remained in stable condition at the hospital.

Police say they were shot by a man in his 50s described as despondent by his wife. They say officers went to his home to check on him and he immediately fired on them.

A third officer who arrived later returned fire and shot the unidentified suspect. The suspect remains hospitalized and will be arrested when he is released.

Police say bulletproof vests played a key role in saving the lives of the wounded officers.
