NCKTech-Summer14
The Hays Eagles score four runs in the fourth inning then add two more in the sixth and beat Longmont-Erie (Colo.) 8-3 to advance to Sunday afternoon’s semifinals of the Wild West Fest tournament. The Eagles improve to 4-0 in the tourney and are now 21-6 overall. A win Sunday at the HHS Field would advance the Eagles to the tournament finals at 5pm at Larks Park.

Kade Parker picks up the complete game victory, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out seven and walking only one.

Trenton Henningson went 3-for-3 and scored two runs while Jake Sedbrook went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. His two-run double highlighted the Eagles four–run fourth inning.

Former Marine Roberts rides with local Marines in WWF parade (VIDEO)

Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts was very happy to be invited to ride on the Marines float in Saturday morning’s Wild West Fest parade in downtown Hays.

“It’s a real privilege to be here,” Roberts said prior to the start of the parade. He visited with several active and retired military members on the float.

This year’s WWF theme, “Home of the Free Because of the Brave,” had significant meaning to Roberts.

“My dad was in Okinawa in Iwo Jima during World War II. I was able to visit there, and I’m a Marine as well.”

The 78-year-old three-term Republican has been combating criticism from his primary opponent, Dr. Milton Wolfe, Overland Park, who contends Roberts shouldn’t represent a state where he no longer lives permanently. Roberts owns a property in Dodge City that he currently rents out.

However, the State Board of Objections unanimously dismissed a challenge in May about Roberts’ residency, clearing the way for the senator to stay on the ballot in the August primary.

Roberts said his re-election campaign is “going fine”:

Roberts’ wife, Franki, joined him on the parade float.

Open letter to the ‘Plant Thief’

Dear Plant Thief,

I hope you are enjoying your 12 beautiful “new-to-you” drought resistant stonecrop succulent plants. I’m certain that they are a lovely addition to your yard, and really look snazzy next to your other “borrowed” landscaping.

Trust me, they are easy to care for, not much maintenance, and environmentally friendly during the hot/dry summers in Hays, KS. This low growing succulent ground cover attracts beautiful butterflies, and looks stunning next to peonies or rose bushes. I too have impeccable taste when it comes to landscaping and choosing just the right plants for my yard, but I’m a stickler for ALWAYS buying my own plants!

I had 12 similar stonecrop succulent plants in my front yard that I planted with my two young sons over the last three years, but while I was on vacation last week they were stolen from my yard. Hmmm, weird!!

Just in case you are interested in PURCHASING YOUR OWN PLANTS, there is this fabulous place called the Hays Greenhouse:
1-70 & Toulon Road, Hays, KS 67601
https://haysgreenhouse.com/

They have gorgeous plants, helpful staff, and thousands of more plants to pick from then what you can find in my front yard. I know that you can’t beat the rock bottom prices in my front yard, but just in case you’d like to garden during daylight hours, lower your bad juju levels, and/or not be arrested I highly recommend a quick trip out to the Hays Greenhouse and BUY YOUR OWN PLANTS!

Hopefully your “new-to-you” landscaping doesn’t become infested with aphids and you don’t have gut wrenching guilt when you cast an eye over “your” new plants. When your neighbors walk by and comment on your beautiful landscaping (like people used to do when they walked past my front yard), be sure to let them know that they’re stolen and that the nice woman who lives on 23rd St. has exemplary taste in plants.

Libby Flores, Hays

P.S. Should you have a conscience, please feel free to leave replacements on my front porch, and then NEVER step foot on my property again! Thank you.

Blue Bird Corp. says the steering problem can develop on some buses made between 2011 and last May if a steering shaft clamp comes into contact with a rubber close out boot on the floor. It also is recalling more than 400 transit buses to fix the same problem.

The company also is recalling 388 Vision school buses made in 2012 or 2013 to address the possible fuel leak.

Gov. Sam Brownback was one of several elected state officials participating in Saturday morning’s Wild West Fest parade in downtown Hays.

The governor arrived at his parade entry spot in plenty of time to visit with other parade participants before it started. Brownback’s convertible was parked next to the fire station where he walked up to a couple on-duty firefighters to shake their hands. Brownback then walked out to the crowd lining Main Street and shook a few more hands.

Back at the convertible being decorated by Ellis County Republican Party Chairwoman Elaine Adams and other volunteers, Brownback took a few minutes to talk about his re-election campaign.

“My strategy is pretty clear,” he said. “One, tell people what we’ve done. We’ve cut taxes, we’ve got private-sector job growth, we’ve got people moving into Kansas. And then tell people what my opponent has done. Paul Davis is an Obama Democrat; I’m mostly a Reagan Republican. And then let people choose.”

The presumed Democratic challenger in the governor’s race is Lawrence attorney and state House Minority Leader Paul Davis. Jill Docking, a Wichita financial planner, is Davis’ running mate. In the August primary, Brownback faces Wichita native Jennifer Winn.

Brownback said he’s hearing several common concerns from constituents as he campaigns across Kansas:

Brownback also talked about state’s Water Vision plan for the next 50 years. The first draft report was released Tuesday.

The Kansas Water Office plans a statewide tour starting July 7 to gather public input.

Although not yet on the itinerary, Brownback said a meeting will be scheduled in Hays.

SW Kansas residents say spring worst in memory

ELKHART, Kan. (AP) — Some longtime southwest Kansas residents accustomed to long periods without rain say this spring was one of the worst they can remember.

The Hutchinson News reports Morton County, which sits closer to three state capitals than its own in Topeka, still has received only about 75 percent of normal precipitation, even after an unusually wet June.

Morton County farmer Scott Shrauner says the county hasn’t received normal rainfall in at least seven years. The July rains came too late to help the dryland wheat crop, which Shrauner says he doesn’t expect to cut much of this year.

The Kansas State University ag research center in Garden City says January through May was the driest start to the year on record with just 2.07 inches of precipitation.

Lobbyist: Camptown casino could be running in year

Casino 6 110727FRONTENAC, Kan. (AP) — Supporters of a bid to bring a casino to southeast Kansas say the long-shuttered Camptown Greyhound Park could be converted quickly into a gambling facility if state regulators approve.

The Joplin Globe reports the park has applied to the Kansas Lottery Commission for the lone remaining casino slot. That slot has gone unfilled since the state legalized casino gambling in 2007.

Legislation that went into effect on Tuesday lowers the investment required for a prospective casino developer from $225 million to $50 million. It also drops the fee the state charges to developers from $25 million to $5.5 million.

Camptown, just north of Pittsburg, opened in 1995 but ran live dog races for less than six months before its owners filed for bankruptcy in early 1996.
