Groundbreaking for an innovative community solar array is expected in late August or early September in Thomas County.
The project, a joint effort between Midwest Energy and Clean Energy Collective, is generating significant interest — in northwest Kansas and beyond.
Midwest Energy representatives will be sharing their perspectives to statewide trade organizations in Kansas and Missouri, and nearly 50 MWE members or businesses have reserved panels.
Participants will receive credit for the power their panels produce directly on their Midwest Energy electric bills.
The array will be constructed adjacent to Midwest’s power plant in Colby.
Midwest spokesman Mike Morley said the farther west one goes in Kansas, the more solar energy potential there is — plus the substation at the Colby plant already had excess capacity.
“It will be generating electricity before the end of the year,” Morley said.
