Huelskamp Supports Compromise Border Funding and Reform Bills

HuelskampWASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) voted to support the supplemental funding bill to address the crisis at the Southern border which passed the House by a vote of 223 to 189. Representative Huelskamp also supported the bill to repeal the unlawful executive order related to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) which passed 216 to 192.

Congressman Huelskamp released the following statement:

“I am pleased the Republican House leadership substantially revised these two bills so as to address the border security needs in a fiscally responsible way and eliminate the amnesty magnet created by President Obama that caused the crisis in the first place.”

“The funding bill is not the blank check the President demanded. Rather, it reduces wasteful spending elsewhere to pay for the immediate humanitarian needs of Obama’s Border Crisis. It boosts border security enforcement. It will pay for National Guard troops to help shore up the border security needs. It speeds up the process for reuniting these individuals with their families back home. It forces Central American nations to crack down on the problem they are allowing to continue. And lastly, it ends the dangerous practice of prohibiting our border patrol from having access to hundreds of border miles on certain federally-owned lands because of environmental restrictions.”

“The second piece of legislation would repeal the amnesty magnet created by President Obama in his DACA executive order – putting an end to the order that encouraged thousands of illegal aliens to rush across our border. Even more importantly, it prevents the President from taking executive action to give illegal immigrants amnesty in the future.”

“What these bills cannot do though is force the Senate Democrats and President Obama to do their jobs. It is ridiculous that Harry Reid and the rest of the Senate Democrats went on vacation, rather than staying in Washington to fix Obama’s Border Crisis. With Reid on vacation, President Obama must actually enforce our nation’s current laws to secure the border and address much of the crisis created by his own lawlessness.”
