Hays Eagles fall in AAA Legion Championship game

The Hays Eagles American Legion fell 7-5 to Pittsburg Sunday, in the second AAA American Legion State Championship game.

Hays beat Pittsburg Friday 9-4 sending them to the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament. But Post 64 defeated Newton and then Hays in the first championship game Saturday for force a second elimination game on Sunday morning.

The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo homerun by Zack Legleiter in to top of the first inning.

Hays added two more in the second on a two-run single by Trenton Henningsen putting the Eagles up 3-0.

Pittsburg got a run in the third and then took advantage of three Eagles errors in the fifth to tie the game at three.

The big inning for Pittsburg came in the sixth when they scored three runs on four hits to go up 7-3.

Down four runs after seven innings the EaglesĀ loaded the bases in both the eighth and the ninth but managed just one run in each inning in the 7-5 loss.

Zack Legleiter was 2-for-5 with a homerun and two runs scored and Kade Parker finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Eagles finished the season 33-10.
