Hundreds turn up for help at Convoy of Hope event

Screen Shot 2014-08-03 at 4.07.45 PMWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Hundreds of people turned up for a weekend event in Wichita that provided free food, clothing and other services.

The Wichita Eagle reports the Convoy of Hope event Saturday served more than 2,400 people by midmorning. Convoy of Hope is a faith-based humanitarian relief organization.

Gail Starnes of Bethel Life, who coordinated the Wichita event, said she and more than 900 volunteers were prepared to help up to 10,000 people Saturday. The event provided free groceries and lunches, shoes, school supplies, haircuts and family portraits.

Some free medical services were also provided, such as immunizations and tests for hearing, vision, blood sugar, blood pressure and HIV.
