Hays USD 489 Financial Director Tracy Kaiser will present a detailed FY 2015 budget at Monday’s school board meeting in advance of the public hearing scheduled for mid-August.

According to the agenda, a public hearing for the budget is  planned Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Rockwell Administration Center. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions or express concerns regarding the proposed budget.

According to the agenda, the public hearing is “for the purpose of hearing and answering objections of taxpayers relating to the proposed use of all funds.”

Also on the agenda for Monday is workers’ compensation insurance coverage, an issue discussed at last week’s work session meeting. Board members were told the district face nearly $60,000 in cancellation fees if the board changed to coverage to the Kansas Association of School Boards as planned.

However, the board was not clear who authorized United Heartland as their carrier after canceling their coverage with Liberty Mutual this summer.

According to the agenda, the administration is recommending the district stay with United Heartland insurance and cancel the coverage with KASB, which is expected not to incur a cancellation fee.

Monday’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Rockwell Administration Building, 323 W. 12th.

The meeting is also streamed live on the USD 489 website and can be watched live on Eagle Channel 13.
