TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican congresswoman Lynn Jenkins has challenged her Democratic opponent to three debates this fall in their race in the 2nd District of eastern Kansas.
Democrat Margie Wakefield’s campaign said immediately Wednesday that there should be more than three. Campaign manager Mark Sump said the candidates should have what he called an actual back-and-forth on the issues.
Jenkins sent Wakefield a letter Wednesday to propose debates at Topeka public television station KTWU, the Eudora Reporter and in Independence with a sponsor and venue both accept.
Most of the letter touted Jenkins’ work in Congress and attacked Wakefield. Sump said the campaign should be free of what he called deception and personal attacks.
Jenkins is seeking her fourth, two-year term in the U.S. House. Wakefield is a Lawrence attorney.
