Several Eagle Communications employees had pies thrown in their face Wednesday afternoon.
Of course it was all for a good cause — to raise money for United Way of Ellis County.
Broadband Division General Manager Travis Kohlrus said Eagle Communications is a one of a small group of businesses in Hays named a United Way pacesetter company, meaning efforts to raise money within the company occur the week before the launch of the United Way’s annual fundraising campaign.

Kohlrus said one idea to raise money was especially sweet.
“We get pies for some of our favorite employees and smack ’em,” he laughed.
Wednesday’s event raised nearly $100 in one hour, and additional fundraising activities at Eagle continue through the week.
“It’s a great way to give back to the community in a united fashion,” Kohlrus said. “The United Way does such a good job allocating those funds where they are most beneficial.”
The official United Way campaign kicks off next week.
Four Eagle employees — Kohlrus, CEO Gary Shorman, Marketing Specialist Rhonda Meyerhoff and Eagle Community Television Sales Manager Greg Schmidt — were the lucky volunteers for the Wednesday’s pie-in-the-face event.
