NEWTON – A 52-year-old Newton man was killed in an officer-involved shooting just after 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
Newton Police were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at 2107 Singletree and, when the first officer arrived on the scene, he met with 52-year-old Leona Wagner. She reported being hit several times by her husband, 52-year-old Sonny Wagner.
The officer went to the opened front door and was confronted by Wagner who was brandishing a large hunting knife. The officer told Wagner repeatedly to drop the knife. The distance between the officer and Wagner was less then 10 feet. Wagner raised the knife and moved toward the officer. The officer fired two rounds from his service sidearm. Wagner collapsed to the floor and was then transported to Newton Medical Center Emergency Room where he was pronounced dead.
The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office is running the investigation with the assistance of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Newton Police Department.
As is routine in cases like this, the officer was placed on administrative leave.
