Kansas Radio Networks will host gubernatorial, Senate debates

Kansas Radio Networks

The Kansas Radio Networks and WIBW Radio, flagship station of the Kansas Radio Networks, will host the first official debates for Kansas governor and U.S. Senate at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson on Sept. 6.

The gubernatorial debate between Republican incumbent Gov. Sam Brownback and Democratic challenger Paul Davis is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Bretz and Young Injury Lawyers at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Libertarian candidate Keen Umbehr also is running for the office. The U.S. senatorial debate — between Republican incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts, Democratic challenger Chad Taylor and Independent Greg Orman — will follow immediately at 11 a.m.

Kelly Lenz, Farm Director, with WIBW Radio/Kansas Agriculture Network, will moderate the governor’s debate.  Lenz said the Kansas State Fair has been the traditional location for the gubernatorial debate for nearly 30 years. In more recent years, U.S. Senate debates, which will be moderated by Assistant Farm Director Greg Akagi, have also become a regular feature of the fair.

A three member media panel will ask questions of the candidates during both debates. Nick Schwien, managing editor of the Hays Daily News, and Michael Schwanke, reporter-anchor of Wichita-based KWCH-TV, will be a part of both media panels. Alex Dingman, news reporter, WIBW-AM Radio, will be the third member of the gubernatorial media panel.  Liz Montano, news reporter, Kansas Information Network, will be the third member of the U.S. senatorial media panel.

Both debates will be broadcast live on WIBW-AM Radio and Kansas Radio Networks affiliate stations across the state. You can also listen to both debates online at www.wibwnewsnow.com.
