ELLIS — Melanie Armbruster, Ellis, has spent the week plotting the route for an upcoming benefit 5K walk/run she organized to help a longtime friend recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Faye Keller is in her 60s and received the news about three weeks ago.

Armbruster said she knew immediately she wanted to do “something” for her friend and that is when she thought of a 5K in Keller’s honor — “Fighting for Faye.”

Armbruster said the news of this month’s 5K in Ellis “is taking off like wildfire,” and she is already receiving many calls from others who want to volunteer their time or participate in the 5K.

“I just kept thinking,  ‘We can do this,’ ” Armbruster said. “It’s wonderful. It’s all about good people who want to do something nice for someone else. It’s nice to see everyone pitching in to help out.”

Armbruster said Keller is humbled by the attention.

“She is happy to know people are coming together to do something for her,” Armbruster said.

The Fighting For Faye 5K is scheduled for Aug. 30 with check-in at 7:30 a.m. and the race scheduled for 8 a.m.

Registration is $15 before Aug. 25, $20 the day of the race.

Armbruster said proceeds will go to help Keller pay for expenses related to treatment and “give her some peace of  mind.”
