Suspect’s statements admissible in homicide case

courtLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Prosecutors will be able to use incriminating statements made by a Lawrence man charged in a deadly apartment shooting.

The Lawrence Journal World reports that Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin ruled Friday that the statements are admissible in court. Thirty-year-old Dustin D. Walker is charged with first-degree murder in the March killing of 39-year-old Patrick Roberts.

The probable cause statement says the shooting happened while Walker was attempting to commit aggravated burglary.

Walker is being held in Douglas County Jail on a $1 million bond. He will next appear in court on Oct. 27, when a date for his jury trial will be set.

Wolf Creek seeks more time to fix faulty sensor

Screen Shot 2014-09-27 at 6.27.46 PMWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wolf Creek nuclear power plant is asking federal regulators for more time to replace a faulty sensor unit that provides an early warning of reactor coolant leaks.

The Wichita Eagle reports that normally the plant would have 30 days to make the fix. But because the repair involves shutting down the plant, operators want to wait until a scheduled shutdown at the end of February.

An unscheduled two- to three-day shutdown would cost customers more than $1 million.

Problems began on Aug. 31 when the sensor unit began to fail, providing false indications of a leak. Records show the sensor quit altogether on Sept. 3 after operators reset it five times in three days.

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

The Fort Hays State defense held Pittsburg State to 80 yards rushing and two field goals and upset the No. 8 Gorillas 7-6 Saturday afternoon in front of 11,489 at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg. It’s the Tigers first win over the Gorillas since 1978 and their first in Pittsburg since 1976.

The Tigers score the only touchdown of the game on their first possession. De’Vante Bausby intercepted a Treveon Albert pass near  the goal line but Ed Williams knocked it away and fell on it in the endzone.

The Gorillas tried to take the lead with just over three minutes to play, but Daniel Lindsey blocked Connor Frazell’s 55 yard attempt. PSU had one final shot but FHSU held them on downs to seal the win.

The Gorillas were held to just 240 yards (80 in the second half) and 13 first downs (4 in the second half).

FHSU generated just 141 yards off offense (74 rushing, 67 passing).

The victory inproves the Tigers to 3-1. PSU falls to 3-1.

KBI forensic center takes shape at Washburn

KBI sealTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s new forensic center is taking shape on the Washburn University campus in Topeka.

A “topping out” ceremony to place the final steel beam required for construction on part of the Forensic Science Center was held Wednesday. Exterior construction on the $55 million project is expected to be completed by December.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the science center is expected to open in October 2015.

The KBI currently uses a lab in the basement of an 86-year-old former junior high school, which has insufficient heating and air conditioning and doesn’t meet standards for a modern forensic laboratory.

Washburn will lease the land and finance the construction with bonds, and then allow the KBI to repay the bonds through rent payments over 20 or 30 years.

Airport repairs runway damaged by wayward plane

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Jabara Airort in Wichita is making plans to repair the runway damaged when a massive cargo plane that mistakenly landed on it last year.

The airport intends to hire a contractor to replace the damaged pavement early next year. A 747 cargo plane, called the Dreamlifter, landed on it instead of at McConnell Air Force Base, nine miles to the south.

The Wichita Eagle reported that Dreamlifters are much heavier than Jabara’s runway was designed to handle.

Brad Christopher, the Wichita Airport Authority assistant director, says the fractures are not a safety issue now. It is unknown how much repairs will cost.

New York-based Atlas Air contracts with Boeing to operate the planes, and the airport plans to ask Atlas to pick up the cost.
