Group: US gambling had $240 billion impact in 2013

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Gambling industry officials say U.S. casinos had a $240 billion economic impact and employed 1.7 million people in 2013.

The American Gaming Association is expected to announce the results of its economic study Tuesday morning at a news conference. The group’s annual G2E Global Gaming Expo kicks off this week at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

Oxford Economics studied the industry’s impact and included spending and revenue that might be linked but not directly connected to a casino. An example is a traveler who visits an area for a casino but also spends at a nearby gas station.

The Associated Press obtained an early copy of the report. G2E is a trade show and conference where new slot machine designs, wagering technology and food and beverage concepts often debut.

KFIX Rock News: Black Sabbath To Release Final Album, Play Final Shows Next Year

4481869900_b74aaa24a1_qIron Man will live again, one last time.

In an interview with Metal Hammer, Ozzy Osbourne revealed that Black Sabbath will record their twentieth and final album.

Rick Rubin, who worked with the band to record their successful 2013 comeback effort, 13, will once again serve as producer.

Ozzy also announced that he, along with Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, will embark on one last tour as Black Sabbath next year.

“The whole Sabbath experience this time around was great,” he said. “We all made friends, we didn’t (mess) around, we all knew that we had a job to do, and we did it. It was a lot of fun. So we’re going to do one more album, and a final tour.”

The trio does not have any new material written yet, but Ozzy hopes to begin recording in early 2015. The timing of the recording will in part depend on Iommi’s health, as the guitarist has been battling lymphoma since 2012.

“Obviously a lot of it is coming down to Tony’s health, he’s obviously got his cancer treatment,” Ozzy said. “But we’ll get onto it next year. I don’t know if we’ll be writing in England or LA, but I’ll fly to the f**king moon for it if I have to!”

Hutchinson schools suing Missouri group over fundraising proceeds

HUTCHINSON (AP) — The Hutchinson School District is suing a Missouri-based group in a dispute over proceeds from a student fundraising effort.

The Hutchinson News reported the Kansas district has filed a lawsuit against Education Funding Group in Reno County District Court. The district claims it didn’t receive it share of proceeds from a fundraiser held during the last academic year. It’s estimating the loss between $11,000 and $15,000.

The Hutchinson district signed a contract with the business in October 2013 for a fundraiser in which students sold $10 discount cards with discounts to various local businesses and restaurants. Under the agreement, the district and company were to evenly split proceeds from the discount cards.

Education Funding Group disagrees that it failed to carry out its obligations under the contract.

HFD stresses importance of smoke detectors for Fire Prevention Week

Hays Post

Having a working smoke detector in your home reduces the likelihood of dying in a house fire by half.

That’s a statistic the new Hays Fire Department Deputy Chief Ryan Hagans wants the public to know and think about during National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 5 to 11.

“The best fire prevention tip is to make sure you have a working smoke detector in your home,” Hagans stressed. “It’s best to have one on every floor of the house and also outside each bedroom door or actually in each bedroom.

“Smoke detectors should be replaced at least every 10 years — every seven years is better. And be sure to change the batteries regularly. An easy way to remember is to do it in conjunction with Daylight Saving Time changes in the spring and fall — change your clock, change your batteries.”

This year Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, Nov. 2.

Thanks to a grant from the office of the state fire marshal, the Hays Fire Department has some smoke detectors free of charge for low-income residents or those on a fixed income.

“Just give us a call, and we’ll even come to your home and install it,” said Hagans.

More information is available at the Hays Fire Department at (785) 628-7330.
