Hays Post

Stephen D. Angle, 63, Hays, is facing two counts of “probable cause of aggravated assault of a law enforcement official by a deadly weapon,” according to Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees.

The kind of weapon allegedly used has not been released.

According to Lt. Ron Rounkles of the Hays Police Department, the incident occurred overnight Monday after police responded to a 911 hang-up call at the 2700 block of Country Lane shortly before 12:30 a.m. Additional details were unavailable.

Drees said the court set Angle’s bond at $20,000.

Angle remained in the Ellis County jail in lieu of bond as of early Wednesday morning.

“Please keep in mind the arrest and/or charging of an individual is merely an allegation of criminal wrongdoing,” Drees said. “The defense maintains a presumption of innocence unless and until proved guilty by a court of law.”

Perry to headline fundraiser for Kansas governor

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is getting some fundraising help from his colleague in Texas.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry will be in Wichita on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. rally at the Republican Party headquarters followed by two private receptions for donors.

Brownback is locked in a surprisingly close race with Democratic challenger Paul Davis amid a backlash from voters concerned about cuts to classroom spending and massive tax cuts which have created revenue shortfalls.

The two Republican governors have had a close relationship for years.

Both are former state agriculture secretaries, and Brownback endorsed Perry’s 2012 campaign for the GOP nomination for president.

Kansas woman to plead in prostitution racketeering case

sex traffickingWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita woman accused of running an escort service as a front for prostitution has told a federal judge she wants to change her plea.

U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren on Tuesday set an Oct. 8 change-of-plea hearing for 60-year-old Saundra J. Lacy at federal court in Wichita.

Prosecutors used a federal racketeering law to indict Lacy in June on 27 counts of racketeering in promotion of prostitution.

Her business, Jessie’s Primetime Entertainment, had hired at least 20 women as escorts. The indictment alleges Lacy required escorts to carry condoms and to engage in sex at the customer’s request.

Prosecutors said the escorts typically charged $160 for a half hour and $185 for an hour. Escorts accepted credit cards and offered customers discount coupons.

Kansas bomb squad detonates suspected pipe bomb

policeKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kansas City, Kansas, police say they’ve detonated what appeared to be a pipe bomb that a 4-year-old boy found near his bus stop and brought home.

A bomb squad disposed of the device and no injuries were reported.

Police are investigating why the device was in the neighborhood.
