Johnson, DeVito to miss rest of Chiefs season

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito will miss the remainder of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season after MRI exams confirmed that both players ruptured their right Achilles tendons in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee.

Johnson went down without getting touched near the end of the first half. Eight plays later, early in the second half, DeVito went down at nearly the same spot on the field.

The blows are significant to a Chiefs team that was already missing several key pieces to injuries and suspensions, and was routed 26-10 by the Titans at Arrowhead Stadium. Johnson had four tackles before getting carted off the field, moving him within 15 of 1,000 for his career. That would surpass Gary Spani for the franchise record.

HOXIE – A project that improved 19 miles of Kansas 23 north of Hoxie will be open to traffic within the next two weeks.

Kansas Transportation Secretary Mike King and elected officials participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $14.5 million project today in Hoxie. Joining King was State Sen. Ralph Ostmeyer, Rep. Don Hineman, Sheridan County Commissioner Doyle Kauk and Kip Spray, whose Venture Inc. construction company of Great Bend did the reconstruction work.

The six-month project included the removal of old pavement, rebuilding the road base and paving.  The work widened the road by 4 feet.

“When this road opens you’re going to have a wider paved road that is safe and comfortable for you and your families,” King said.

King also announced that Hoxie will receive a $700,000 Geometric Improvement award to rebuild a 500-foot section of K-23 just north of U.S. 24. The project will tie into the larger K-23 project that will soon be open to traffic. The Geometric Improvement project is expected to begin next summer.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has reported to a federal prison in Texarkana, Texas, to begin serving a 10-year sentence.

Nagin arrived at the facility shortly before noon Monday. New Orleans television stations showed images of Nagin hugging family members in a parking lot before he entered the lockup.

The Bureau of Prisons operates a low-security prison there with an adjacent minimum security camp. Bureau spokesman Chris Burke said Nagin reported to the minimum security camp.

Meanwhile, a public defender in New Orleans is pursuing an appeal of Nagin’s February conviction on charges including bribery and money-laundering. The charges stemmed from the Democrat’s two terms as mayor from 2002-2010.

Serious respiratory illness hits hundreds of kids

CDC logoLINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer

CHICAGO (AP) — Hundreds of children in about a dozen states have been sickened by a severe respiratory illness that public health officials suspect may be caused by an uncommon virus similar to the germ that causes the common cold.

Nearly 500 children have been treated at one hospital alone — Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, Missouri — and some required intensive care, according to authorities.

The suspected germ, enterovirus 68, is an uncommon strain of a very common family of viruses that typically hit from summertime through the fall.

The virus can cause mild coldlike symptoms but this summer’s cases are unusually severe, said Mark Pallansch, director of the viral diseases division at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It’s not highly unusual but we’re trying to understand what happened this year in terms of these noticeable and much larger clusters of severe respiratory disease,” Pallansch said Monday.

The virus typically causes illness lasting about a week and most children recover with no lasting problems.

Authorities in Illinois and Colorado said their states are among those with suspected or confirmed cases.

Children with asthma and other health problems are especially at risk, but reported cases include children without asthma who have developed asthmalike breathing problems, Pallansch said. He said no deaths have been reported in the outbreak.

Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, director of infectious diseases at Children’s Mercy, said local cases began appearing in mid-August and they appear to have peaked in her area.

KU’s Dexter McDonald tabbed Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Kansas Athletics

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior cornerback Dexter McDonald was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday following his standout performance in the Jayhawks’ season-opening win over Southeast Missouri State.

McDonald, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, led the Kansas defense with the first multiple interception game of his career. He first picked off SEMO quarterback Kyle Snyder in the end zone and returned it 62 yards to keep the Redhawks scoreless in the first half. He then grabbed a second interception off of Snyder five minutes into the third quarter, returning it 10 yards. Additionally, McDonald was credited with two solo tackles and two pass breakups, giving him four passes defended in the game.

McDonald is the first Kansas player to be honored by the Big 12 Conference in its weekly awards since running back James Sims picked up the weekly offensive award on Nov. 18. He is the first Jayhawk to pick up the conference’s defensive honor since Justin Springer was tabbed for the weekly award on Sept. 11, 2010.

Additionally, McDonald was tabbed an honorable mention defensive back of the week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA), while his teammate Trevor Pardula was honored by the CFPA as an honorable mention punter of the week. The CFPA are based on objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.

KFIX Rock News: Mick Jagger To Appear In New James Brown Documentary Premiering On HBO Next Month

jamesmickOn the heels of the recently released James Brown biopic Get On Up, a full-length documentary focusing on the Godfather of Soul titled Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown will premiere on HBO on October 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The film was produced and includes an appearance by Mick Jagger, who also was one of the executive producers of Get On Up.

Directed by veteran documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney, Mr. Dynamite follows Brown’s career from his early success as an R&B singer through his emergence as a pioneering funk artist and civil-rights activist.

The movie was made with the cooperation of the late entertainer’s estate, and includes rare and previously unseen film footage and photos of “the hardest working man in show business.”

“We had full access to amazing never-before-seen photos and video from James Brown’s estate, which Alex Gibney used brilliantly to tell the story of James’ career from its inception through its pinnacle,” says Jagger in a statement.

“We spoke with the extraordinary people who knew James well and worked alongside him throughout his career.  By hearing their fascinating stories and memories, we were able to paint the full picture of James as both a musical artist and social activist, whose legacy and impact on the music industry is ever-present.”

Gibney, meanwhile, reveals that Jagger “reached out to” him to ask him if he’d direct the movie, while noting that they shared the same goal for the project, “to take the music of James Brown and put it into a larger historical context.”

Mr. Dynamite features archival interviews with Brown, as well as new conversations with Jagger, Rev. Al Sharpton, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Questlove of The Roots and such Brown collaborators as Maceo Parker, Clyde Stubblefield, Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, Bootsy Collins and Fred Wesley.

Response to Roberts by Traditional Republicans for Common Sense

It’s sad and more than just a little pitiful that after 34 years in Congress and three terms in the US Senate Pat Roberts is allowing his managers to resort to finger pointing in a desperate attempt to hold his seat in the Senate. This is exactly what’s so wrong about politics in this country today and exactly the reason why we need to elect Greg Orman to the Senate.

The statement yesterday from Senator Roberts’ campaign is, simply, false. In three places in his first four sentences, he refers to a LIST. Well, there was NO LIST, either in my statement on behalf of the organization, nor in statements from two of our members who asked to be heard on this occasion.

If they were referring to the list of “founding” members on the back of our brochure, they should have noted that it was out of date, because it contained the names of two members who are no longer living. Also, this would have been obvious if the senator’s staff would have just read the first four words of the statement I read at the conference and that was distributed to those assembled. Those first four words were: “The Board of Directors”.

The statement I made was on behalf of the Board of Directors of Traditional Republicans for Common Sense. There was no effort on my part to suggest that this represented our total membership, or even a majority of our membership.

Since our inception, we have always operated on the principal of consensus. In the survey of our 70-some members, only 7 indicated they would not want their name listed as an endorser of Greg Orman. Some of those, however, indicated they were going to vote for Greg, they just didn’t want their name to appear in opposition to Pat Roberts.

The fact that Roberts’ campaign found only three members of our group who wished to speak in support of his election is very surprising. Surprising in that the number isn’t higher. After his many years of associating with our members while they were part of the Kansas legislature, it would suggest that there should have been stronger bonds established between the two.

Most of our members, like many Kansans, have voted for Pat Roberts over and over. But, recent votes on a number of issues, the farm bill for instance, have caused them to re-think their support for the senator. Also, the one issue most cited as being the “dagger” was the senator’s vote to deny adoption of the International Treaty for Disability Rights, which had been championed by Bob Dole and with Senator Dole, in his wheelchair, there on the senate floor as he voted. That, for a lot of us, was the LAST STRAW. That vote would have cost him nothing, and for most of us it was a clear “slap in the face” to a great Kansan.

Finally, I noticed with some interest the entities listed as having endorsed the senator. Particularly, I was interested in the endorsement from NFIB, an organization of small businesses that I used to represent as the Kansas Director. Does their endorsement mean that every member of NFIB endorses Pat Roberts? Have they supplied us with a current list of members so we can check their choice for US Senator? OF COURSE NOT!

A product of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Waters also threw for 239 yards on 16-of-29 aim, which included a 57-yard pass to Tyler Lockett to set up K-State’s first touchdown of the game and a 23-yarder to Lockett on the game-winning drive.
