Waters leads inconsistent K-State

By LUKE MEREDITH

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Kansas State certainly has its issues following a 32-28 win over Iowa State on Saturday.

It also has mental toughness and a star quarterback in Jake Waters – two things that could go a long way in the Big 12 this season.

The 19th-ranked Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) allowed 28 straight points to an offense that scored half that many against an FCS team a week earlier. But they also held Iowa State scoreless in the second half, and Waters led Kansas State on an 80-yard, game-winning drive in just 91 seconds.

“There was a lot of character involved with playing the last five minutes of the game the way that they did,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said.

Kansas State’s strong finish was bookended by an encouraging start.

It was the middle of the game that got away from the Wildcats.

Kansas State needed just five plays to take a 7-0 lead, and it held Iowa State (0-2, 0-1) without a yard on its first series. The Wildcats then quickly drove to the Cyclones 10-yard line before stalling out.

Kansas State settled for field goals on back-to-back drives in the first quarter. It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time since the Wildcats held a staggering 171-9 advantage in yardage, but it would soon come back to haunt them.

“After the first drive, we turned around and have to kick two field goals. It was a 13-0 ballgame instead of a 21-0 game. That made a huge difference. I think that’s where the real letdown was, right there,” Snyder said.

Iowa State’s stops gave it hope that a comeback was still possible.

The Cyclones spent the next 15 minutes doing whatever it wanted against Kansas State’s inexperienced defense.

Quarterback Sam Richardson led Iowa State on an 85-yard scoring drive to end the first quarter. The Wildcats then let Jarvis West run a punt back 82 yards for a touchdown, and West’s perfect pass off to freshman Allen Lazard off a reverse put the Cyclones ahead 21-13.

Kansas State’s defense gave up its third touchdown in less than 14 minutes late in the first half, with DeVondrick Nealy capping a 75-yard drive on a short TD run.

But to its credit, Kansas State responded.

The Wildcats got a touchdown back before halftime and stuffed Iowa State on a 4th-and-1 in K-State territory to start the second half.

Kansas State outscored Iowa State 19-0 over the final 31 minutes, and Waters took control with his arm and his legs.

Waters threw for 239 yards and rushed for 138 more as the offense averaged nearly seven yards a play without turning the ball over.

“Another side of me kind of came out. I haven’t really shown that a lot. I just wanted it so bad,” Waters said. “I just knew that we had it in us.”

The Wildcats have a few extra days to sort out their defensive issues before their biggest test so far.

Auburn visits Manhattan on Sept. 18 in one of the marquee matchups of the young season.

“We had a lot of toughness to win a ball game and we didn’t quit. We finished like we wanted to,” running back Charles Jones said.

Screen Shot 2014-09-07 at 6.43.52 PMHUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A Hutchinson man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexually abusing a pair of 13-year-old girls.

The Hutchinson News reports that a Reno County judge on Friday also sentenced 25-year-old Michael Stahl to lifetime post-release supervision. Stahl was convicted of multiple charges, including four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The judge followed a plea agreement in the case in granting a departure from Jessica’s law on the indecent liberty convictions, which mandated a life sentence. Court documents say Stahl was diagnosed with mild mental disabilities, but an examination ruled he was mentally competent to stand trial.

Stahl first made contact with his victims online. He was arrested in October 2013 in a sting set up by police posing as another teen

NEW YORK (AP) — Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals turned Derek Jeter Day into another disappointing defeat for the New York Yankees’ captain in the dwindling days of his career.

Ventura pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the AL Central leaders beat the Yankees 2-0 Sunday on a pair of unearned runs for their second shutout in the three-game series.

Kansas City scored due to errors by pitcher Shane Greene (4-3) in the second inning and right fielder Carlos Beltran in the third. The Royals, who won 1-0 Friday night on an unearned run following an error by third baseman Chase Headley, went 4-3 against the Yankees this year to take the season series for the first time since 1999.

Court tosses charges in Wyandotte County case

Screen Shot 2014-09-07 at 5.02.47 PMTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A lawyer indicted six years ago on charges that he bilked the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities out of $400,000 has won another legal battle.

The Kansas City Star reports that the Kansas Supreme Court ruled Friday to throw out charges against 74-year-old Rodney L. Turner.

In the ruling, the high court affirmed a 2009 lower court decision that found the case was tainted by a detective’s inappropriate testimony to the grand jury that indicted Turner. Court documents show the detective suggested Turner and former BPU chief administrative officer Marc Conklin were connected to an unsolved 1987 killing.

Conklin also was indicted in the BPU case. He committed suicide in 2009.

The decision also raised questions about the strength of the evidence used to support Turner’s indictment.

FHSU women’s soccer dominant in 4-0 victory over Sioux Falls

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State continued its impressive start to the season with a 4-0 victory over Sioux Falls on Sunday, Sept. 7.  It was the second straight four-goal performance by the Tigers, and was the second regional victory in as many games.

Freshman Kelsey Steffens had two goals for the Tigers, while Jordan Hester and Jordan Shaw scored as well. Hailey Davey assisted in three of the goals, setting a new school record for assists in a single game.

Hester carried over her strong play from Friday, scoring her third goal of the young season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 19:38.  Davey’s cross pass tipped off Cougar goalkeeper Cheyanne Carpenter’s fingers towards Hester, who finished from 10 yards out.

FHSU extended its lead to 2-0 just before half on Steffens’ first career goal as Davey picked up her second assist of the game.  In the 45th minute (44:28), Davey’s cross found Steffens waiting, who dribbled it in for the score.

In the 66th minute, Shaw took a free kick from 30 yards out, driving a shot to the top right side of the net and pushing the lead to three.

Inside 10 minutes to play in regulation (81:05), Steffens netted her second goal of the day, gathering a cross from Davey in the middle of the box, hitting a shot past goalkeeper Jordin Crosby.

FHSU controlled the ball most of the contest, firing 28 shots and allowing just two USF attempts, neither of which were on goal. The Tigers’ Kristen Thompson recorded her first shutout in goal, playing all 90 minutes.

The Tigers travel to Colorado next weekend for matches against Colorado State-Pueblo (Friday, Sept. 12) and UC-Colorado Springs (Sunday, Sept. 14).  FHSU will make its home debut Sept. 19 against Nebraska-Kearney.

Task force unable to pinpoint cause of Kan. earthquakes

Screen Shot 2014-07-29 at 7.57.11 AMWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A task force appointed by Gov. Sam Brownback to find out why the number of earthquakes in the state has been rising says there isn’t enough data to make a determination.

The Wichita Eagle reports there were 49 earthquakes between the start of the year and late August, mainly in the south-central part of the state where a practice known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has contributed to a steady rise in gas and oil production.

Many have pointed fingers at fracking, which uses a mixture of sand, water and chemicals under high pressure to release oil and gas from rock, as the cause for the increase in earthquakes.

But task force chairman Rex Buchanan says there’s no baseline against which the recent number of quakes can be compared.

Colin Powell honored at Fort Leavenworth

Fort LeavenworthFORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) — A bust has been added to a Buffalo Soldier monument at Fort Leavenworth honoring former secretary of state and military leader Colin Powell.

The Kansas City Star reports that about 1,000 people gathered Friday for a dedication event. Powell told the crowd that there were no statues honoring the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers when he was stationed at the fort during the 1980s.

Buffalo Soldiers were all-black units that served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War. They included the 10th Cavalry, formed at Fort Leavenworth in 1866.

Powell says he hopes the monument, now more than two decades old, will “inspire future generations of young men and young women of all the colors of the American rainbow to serve as these cavalry men did.”

Kansas town wants grand jury in landfill fight

courtRIVERTON, Kan. (AP) — A group of residents in southeast Kansas is seeking a grand jury to investigate a proposal for a landfill near their town.

A petition filed by a group in Riverton sought a grand jury to investigate actions by the Galena City Council.

A judge denied the request in late August, but the opposition group says it is seeking legal help and will work to get the petition approved.

The Joplin Globe reports  opposition started after Galena City Council members in early July approved steps to acquire a 160-acre tract of land and turn about 40 acres into a landfill. The land is near Riverton.

The group wants a grand jury to investigate how the land was acquired and how the contract for the proposed landfill was formed.
