As they did with their first building, Celebration Community Church has again paid their building loan off in less than half the length of the loan, saving $321,300 in interest.

Celebration Community Church celebrated paying off the 15,000s square-foot addition by burning their mortgage in each of their five Sunday worship services.

Founding and Senior Pastor Kyle Ermoian thanked the congregation for their generous giving and faithful commitment to C3’s growth and fulfillment of their 2020 vision to reach Hays and beyond with the life-giving message of Jesus Christ!

REVIEW: ‘The Equalizer’ ends up in the green

“The Equalizer” is a gritty, violent action-thriller that reunites “Training Day” alums Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua, which follows a quiet man with a mysterious past who is thrust into a private war against Russian crime lords. As per usual, Washington delivers an intense, easy-to-like performance that is both amicable and somehow threatening; and Fuqua delivers a well-crafted action scenes with above average inventiveness set against passable dramatic heft.

While the main plot may be unoriginal, it is executed surprisingly well. The sub-plots and character-specific idiosyncrasies are engaging and add to the overall experience. Thankfully, “The Equalizer” avoids many of the easy-to-hate action-thriller tropes such as a villain asking the protagonist the question, “Who are you?” and the hero responding with the name of the movie, i.e., “I’m the Equalizer.” That line is notably and pleasingly absent.

Luckily, the good and bad parts of “The Equalizer” are not mathematically equal. The film gets right more than it gets wrong and therefore, smaller sins such as terrible henchmen facial hair can be more easily forgiven.

I wouldn’t go so far as to urge readers to run out and catch “The Equalizer” at their earliest opportunity. However, it’s a well-made action flick that, at very worst, is the kind of film that group could confidentially select when “action-thriller” is the theme of movie night, with little fear of disappointment from any individual member.

State: Private school tuition program about ready

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas education official says a new tax-credit system to fund private school tuition for low-income students is on track to start in January.

Deputy education commissioner Dale Dennis says application forms for the tuition program are nearly ready.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the program will allow businesses to donate to nonprofit organizations for scholarships for low-income children attending public schools to transfer to private schools. The businesses would receive a tax credit that subtracts 70 percent of their donation from their tax bills.

Dennis says he thinks the Legislature wanted the program ready by January and his department is working to meet that goal.

Only children who attend one of 99 Kansas public schools considered low-performing are eligible for the scholarships.

Screen-Shot-2014-07-03-at-5.13.15-AM-150x150.pngWabaunsee County- A woman was injured in an accident just before 1:30 a.m. on Monday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Honda CRV driven by Brandy Nicole Conyers, 26, Lafayette, CA., was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of Wamego.

The driver fell asleep. The vehicle drifted into the grass median, the driver over corrected back onto highway, and then re-entered the median and the vehicle over turned.

Conyers was transported to Geary Community Hospital.

The KHP reported she was properly restrained at the time of the accident.

Lawsuit could scramble Kansas Senate race again

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 5.29.27 AMTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An arcane legal dispute over the lack of a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Kansas could upend a key contest in the fight for control of the Senate.

The national spotlight is on three-term Republican Sen. Pat Roberts and independent challenger Greg Orman.

But a case being heard Monday by a three-judge panel in Shawnee County District Court centers on whether state law requires Democrats to pick a new candidate after Chad Taylor withdrew earlier this month.

Some Democrats pushed Taylor out. They viewed Orman as a stronger rival for Roberts and wanted to avoid a split in the anti-Roberts vote.

Republicans need to gain six seats for a Senate majority and have counted on Roberts winning.

The judges are expected to rule this week.

Dog rescued from Arkansas City drainage system

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 5.21.14 AMARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Authorities have rescued a dog that was trapped for at least 30 hours in a southern Kansas canal.

KAKE-TV reports  police and firefighters lassoed the dog on Sunday after reports from concerned Arkansas City residents.

Witnesses say the black Labrador retriever was first reported to be stuck in the drainage system on Saturday morning. The water is about 4 feet deep in some parts of the 12-feet-tall canal.

Witnesses say they unsuccessfully tried to coax the dog out with treats and bologna and that one man waded through the water to try to reach the animal.

The dog was taken to the Cowley County Humane Society. Staff members say the dog was wearing a collar but the ID tags are missing.

Trooper: Kansas man dies in Oklahoma highway crash

Screen Shot 2014-07-07 at 8.32.26 AMARDMORE, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports a Kansas man has died and two others in the vehicle have been hospitalized in a Carter County wreck.

Troopers say 29-year-old Christopher Partee was ejected from the vehicle and died on Sunday afternoon. The driver and another passenger from Topeka were hospitalized.

Troopers say their vehicle was northbound on Interstate 35 when another vehicle attempted a U-turn in front of them. They say the driver tried to avoid the turning vehicle and lost control of the car, which rolled over.

The other vehicle left the scene.

Authorities are investigating the crash.

Wichita zoo officials detail elephant exhibit

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 5.10.46 AMWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Sedgwick County Zoo officials say they will house the third largest elephant exhibit in the country once a recently funded renovation is completed.

Construction on the 5-acre exhibit will begin next month and be complete in May 2016. Officials say it’s a necessary move to comply with upcoming regulations by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. They plan to eventually house five African elephants in the exhibit, which will be the first in the country to offer boat rides.

The county commissioners voted to spend $5.3 million for an elephant barn at the public-private partnership.

Officials say there will be an underwater fence so that the elephants and boats don’t come too close in the canal.

Senator brings in Jeb Bush to campaign in Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts is bringing in another Republican heavy-hitter to help bolster his troubled campaign for re-election.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will be in Wichita on Monday for a fundraising event for the Kansas senator.

His visit on the campaign trial comes just days after former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin campaigned with Roberts in southeast Kansas. Two former presidential nominees, U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, joined Roberts on the campaign trail last week. Another potential 2016 White House candidate, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, is also expected to help him campaign.

Roberts once was considered a near lock for re-election but now faces a tough battle from independent businessman Greg Orman after the Democratic candidate withdrew.
