KFIX Rock News: Full Unreleased Version Of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” Streaming Online
Last week, Led Zeppelin debuted a trailer for the upcoming deluxe reissues of the band’s classic 1971 album, Led Zeppelin IV, that featured a segment of an unreleased rough early mix of the record’s lead track, “Black Dog.”
Now, a full version of the rarity has premiered on RollingStone.com.
The song, which kicks off the companion audio disc included with the Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions of Led Zeppelin IV, is titled “Black Dog (Basic Track with Guitar Overdubs)” and is notable for some of the extremely high notes frontman Robert Plant hits.
“‘Black Dog’ is obviously one of the songs that Led Zeppelin is really noted for,” guitarist Jimmy Page, who’s overseeing the reissue campaign, tells Rolling Stone.
“It’s one of the powerhouse numbers that we did with an incredible riff. The version on the companion disc is a rough mix in its early stage with minimal guitar overdubs and Robert’s original vocal. And you can hear how mean it is.”
The Led Zeppelin IV bonus disc will feature unheard versions of all eight songs from the original album, including an alternate version of “Stairway to Heaven” that was recorded at Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angeles.
The remastered editions of Led Zeppelin IV will be released on October 28, as will revamped versions of the group’s 1973 album, Houses of the Holy.
For details about the different configurations of the reissues that will be available for purchase, visit LedZeppelin.com.

Kansas Sen. Roberts’ re-election team overhauled
JOHN HANNA, AP Political Writer
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts’ re-election campaign in Kansas is being overhauled as his race becomes an unexpected battleground in the fight for control of the Senate.
A person familiar with the Roberts campaign said Friday that longtime aide Leroy Towns stepped down Thursday as Roberts’ executive campaign manager. The source said the campaign is expanding and has hired a member of Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo’s campaign staff to run grassroots operations.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to discuss the changes publicly.
Also, the National Republican Senatorial Committee moved to help Roberts, sending in a seasoned consultant, Chris LaCivita.
Kansas was seen as a safe GOP state, but the three-term incumbent looked vulnerable after a tough primary fight.
Federal budget crunch idles Guard units across US

CINCINNATI (AP) — Training drills for tens of thousands of Army National Guard members from New Hampshire to Hawaii have been called off this weekend because of a federal budget shortfall.
A National Guard spokesman says a $101 million gap in funding for training is being addressed by postponing drills, suspending travel and other steps. Meanwhile, there are efforts underway to get funding reallocated so the drills can be held later this month.
Among other states that have put off National Guard training exercises are Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio and New York. Some, including Alaska, Oregon and Vermont, plan to go ahead as scheduled.
Among reasons for the shortfall are fewer citizen-soldier deployments overseas that are funded separately and higher-than-expected attendance for training paid by the Guard.
Weapon sales by ex-officers being investigated
BEL AIRE, Kan. (AP) — Law enforcement officials say former officers in the Bel Aire police department are being investigated for possible illegal weapons sales.
Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter confirmed a joint local-federal investigation has been ongoing since December but he declined to offer further details.
Bel Aire Police Chief Darrell Atteberry said the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are leading the investigation. Atteberry, who became chief in May, stressed that no current officers are being investigated.
Sheriff Easter says his office is also part of the investigation.

New polycarts would be cheaper, more durable (VIDEO)
Although they couldn’t agree on the color, Hays city commissioners are agreeable to a request by the Public Works Department to change the supplier of its polycarts for solid waste collection.
Public Works Director I.D. Creech told commissioners during Thursday’s work session the city needs to purchase 400 more carts to replace aging carts and to have extras on hand for new customers.
“Single-family homes still have about 65 percent of the polycarts,” Creech said, “but duplexes are our biggest growth area, and that’s reflected in the increase of building permits for duplexes.”
The sole-source polycart purchase would be from Rehrig Pacific Co. in Desoto. The current supplier, Mid-Kart, no longer manufactures the style used by the city, although “they have a 10-year complete warranty on the ones we have,” Creech added.
The Rehrig carts are similar to what Hays is using and would be “less expensive and a little more thicker — durable,” according to Creech.
Commissioners tossed around the idea of outsourcing the collection of trash and recyclables, but agreed with Creech the city’s investment has resulted in a “very clean community.”
“That’s because of all the rules and regulations the city has regarding trash collection. The rates are in line with what a private hauler would charge customers.”
There are about 7,300 blue polycarts in the automated collection program which began in 2008. The purchase request will be considered for approval at next week’s regular Hays City Commission meeting.
Oakley man arrested in Gove County on suspicion of murder

WAKEENEY — A 36-year-old man is being held in the Trego County jail after his arrest Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder.
The Kansas Attorney General’s Office said Jason Scott Force, Oakley, reportedly was arrested by the Gove County Sheriff’s Office in Quinter at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday after a manhunt that included patrols on the north side of Hays. No details on the incident leading to the arrest have been made available. Pending charges also include felony child abuse.
Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin told Hays Post local law enforcement received a call at approximately 3:30 p.m. from Gove County officials on an attempt to locate the suspect, whose cellphone reportedly was “pinged” off a tower north of Catharine. Later, the phone pinged near Walmart, where a pickup registered to the suspect reportedly was located.
The Hays search was called off after yet another cellphone ping, this time west of WaKeeney.
A first appearance in court was scheduled this morning. Assistant Kansas Attorney General Nicole Romine reportedly will handle the case.
Harbin said several law enforcement agencies, also including the Hays Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol, participated in the investigation, calling it a “joint effort” to locate the suspect.

Apple to add more security measures
NEW YORK (AP) — Apple is planning to add more security measures to help protect its users following a celebrity photo hacking incident.
CEO Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that Apple Inc. will use email and push notifications to let users know when someone tries to restore iCloud data on a new device, change an account password or attempts an initial log on to an account with a new device. Previously there were no notifications for restoring iCloud data.
Apple expects to start sending notifications in two weeks.
An Apple spokesman confirmed the report Friday but declined to comment further than what was said in the interview.
On Tuesday Apple acknowledged computer hackers broke into the accounts of several celebrities. The company said it found no evidence of a widespread problem in iCloud or its Find my iPhone service.

KHAZ Country Music News: Garth Launches Ghosttunes
CHICAGO (AP) – Garth Brooks couldn’t find a digital music service he liked, so he created his own. Brooks has been a longtime holdout for selling his music digitally but he’s now selling it through GhostTunes.com. He’s a part owner. Brooks says the site is friendlier to artists and to consumers. He’s selling his entire catalog, plus an upcoming live album, his upcoming studio album and the studio album he’ll put out next year as a bundle for what he calls a “stupid” price: $30. Brooks says if you waited all this time for him to go digital, you should be rewarded. The site also sells millions of recordings from other artists as well.
