HaysMed launches meditation, relaxation group for cancer patients

HMC haysmed

Hays Medical Center

The Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute at HaysMed is providing a new Meditation and Relaxation Group for anyone who has been diagnosed with or has finished treatment for cancer.

The group will meet on the second Wednesday of the month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. starting Oct. 8. The sessions will be held at the Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Institute, 2220 Canterbury.

Facilitator for the sessions is Camille Ellard, a licensed social worker with the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute. The new group is a result of the positive response received after Ellard conducted a session at a recent breast cancer retreat.

“People seemed to feel a lot of relief from the session,” said Ellard said. “They asked me if I would lead a group that met regularly.”

She noted this type of therapy is very popular in cancer settings and data shows regular participation in meditation and relaxation results in a decrease in stress levels.
The session are free.

Kansas man who hid under bed sentenced to 5 years

jailLEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man who hid under a bed at his children’s home to spy on them has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Thirty-five-year-old Earl Brockington Jr., of Kansas City, Kansas, was sentenced Wednesday for five crimes, including robbery and domestic battery.

Prosecutors say Brockington entered the Leavenworth home of the mother of his children on April 21 and hid under a bed for several hours while spying on the family.

The mother testified during a trial in August that she thought her son was imagining things when he told her someone was under the bed. The Leavenworth Times reports that after he was discovered, Brockington and the woman struggled over telephones before she was able to get the children out of the house.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The case against a Kansas man charged with plotting a suicide bombing at a Wichita airport is expected to return to federal court for a progress update.

U.S. District Judge Monti Belot has scheduled a status conference on Thursday for Terry Loewen, an avionics technician facing terrorism-related charges. Such proceedings are routinely used to keep the judge apprised of developments in the litigation.

Loewen was arrested in December and accused of trying to bring a van filled with inert explosives onto the tarmac at the airport, where he worked. His arrest followed a months-long sting operation.

He has pleaded not guilty to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempting to use an explosive device to damage property and attempting to give material support to al-Qaida.

Eisenhower Memorial returns to DC planning panel

Screen Shot 2014-10-02 at 5.05.53 AMWASHINGTON (AP) — A federal agency’s staff that oversees planning for the nation’s capital is supporting architect Frank Gehry’s revised design for a memorial honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower near the National Mall.

The National Capital Planning Commission staff is recommending the panel grant preliminary approval Thursday for the latest design.

Gehry revised his design in September for a memorial park. He removed two large, steel tapestries on the sides of the park and left one as a backdrop depicting the Kansas landscape of Eisenhower’s Midwestern roots. Statues would depict Eisenhower as president and war general.

In April, the planning commission rejected the previous design, citing the large scale and placement of columns holding the tapestries.

Winning approval from the planning commission would be a significant step for the long-delayed memorial project.
