ATLANTIC, Va. (AP) — NASA and officials from a commercial rocket company are searching for debris and answers following the explosion of a rocket and cargo module that were to deliver supplies to astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

Bill Wrobel is director of NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility at Wallops Island, Virginia. He says crews plan to hit the ground at daybreak Wednesday to search for pieces of Orbital Sciences Corp.’s Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo ship.

The cargo ship that exploded Tuesday evening was carrying 5,000 pounds of experiments and equipment for NASA, as well as prepackaged meals and freeze-dried Maryland crabcakes for a Baltimore-born astronaut who’s been in orbit five months.

NASA space station program manager Mike Suffredini says astronauts at the station currently have enough supplies to last until spring.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A commercial supply ship bound for the International Space Station has exploded moments after liftoff.

Orbital Sciences Corp.’s unmanned rocket blew up over the launch complex at Wallops Island, Virginia, just six seconds after liftoff.

The company says no one was believed to be hurt and the damage appeared to be limited to the facilities.

Flames could be seen shooting into the sky as the sun set.

The Cygnus cargo ship was loaded with 5,000 pounds of gear for the six people living on the space station. It was the fourth Cygnus bound for the orbiting lab; the first flew just over a year ago.

NASA is paying the Virginia-based Orbital Sciences and the California-based SpaceX company to keep the space station stocked in the post-shuttle era. This is the first disaster in that effort.

Meetings aimed at boosting exports start this week

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 5.16.50 AMWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita-based trade advisory firm is working with Kansas communities to identify companies that seem ready to export but haven’t yet.

Staff for the nonprofit Kansas Global Trade Services and the state of Kansas will speak at six gatherings of local government and business leaders around the state in coming months.

The Wichita Eagle reports the first meeting will be Thursday in Manhattan. A Wichita meeting will be announced soon.

Wichita is an export powerhouse because of its aircraft industry, but industries such as machinery, chemicals and agriculture also export. Development officials say they will aim not at the large firms in those industries but at niche companies and suppliers.

Studies cited by Kansas Global Trade Services have found that each additional $1 billion in exports equals 6,000 jobs.

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State saw its five-game win streak snapped at the hands of No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday (Oct. 28), dropping a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-14) contest at Pass, Set, Pink Night.

FHSU slipped back to one game under .500 with the loss, sitting at 12-13 overall on the season and 6-10 in conference play.  The Tigers remain just one game short of tying their single-season conference win mark as members of the MIAA.

FHSU hung tough until 8-all in the first set, but allowed a 5-0 run by the Lopers that gave the visitors breathing room to finish out the set, 25-17.

Coach Kurt Kohler Interview

The Tigers had a chance to tie the match in the second set, but couldn’t pull off the set win after looking at set point (24-23).  Earlier in the set, tied 10-all, the Lopers broke out to a 13-11 lead, but FHSU answered, setting in motion back-and-forth play that brought the game to 21-all.

FHSU grabbed control at 22-21, 23-22 and 24-23, but all three times saw UNK answer.  At FHSU’s set point, 24-23, UNK broke off with three straight points to take the set, 26-24, and spoil the Tigers’ win.

Out of the break, FHSU led 3-1, but was UNK answer to take a 4-3 lead.  Soon after, tied 5-5, UNK used three straight kills from Caitlin Broadwell to take the lead for good (up 8-5).  The Tigers couldn’t recover, falling in the third set, 25-14.

Mallory Flagor led the team with 10 kills on the evening, hitting double-digits for the 18th time this season.  Flagor’s three blocks (one solo) was also tied for the team lead, with Callie Christensen.

In the back row, Keanu Bradley dug up 18 attacks, while Kristen Conor had nine digs to go with 13 assists, second on the team behind Reagan Vanderplas (17 assists).
