Kan. working to reduce 34.8% prisoner recidivism rate

ks dept of corrections logoTOPEKA — An in-depth look at current trends and changes within the Kansas Department of Corrections has been published and is available to the public.

The KDOC Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2014 gives historical data and projections for the future in the areas of population, costs and services. While summarizing key data on growth, the report helps the agency plan and budget for the future. It also serves as a resource for the structure of the agency, including contact information for the state’s correctional facilities and parole offices.

“Compiling the annual report gives our agency an opportunity to take a big picture look at what we’re doing and where we’re headed,” said Secretary Ray Roberts. “It can be valuable to policy-makers, media and the public as we all work together to ensure public safety.”

The report can be viewed online at www.doc.ks.gov/publications/kdoc-annual-reports/2014.

Featured in the report are a message from Roberts, departmental developments within FY 2014, and a detailing of the history of capital punishment in the state. The FY 2014 report includes statistical information about both adult and juvenile offender populations.

One young student and one longtime staff member from Hays USD 489 are the district’s first recipients of the Best of the Best Awards announced at Monday’s board of education meeting.

O’Loughlin Elementary third-grader Mahala Gregg won the Best of the Best student award and O’Loughlin fourth-grade teacher Sonya Herl was chosen as the district’s Best of the Best staff  member.

Mahala was nominated by her teacher, Amy Wasinger, and not, as Wasinger said, for the “traditional” reasons such as excellence in academics or sports, but for her kindness.

“(Mahala) has a huge heart. We went on a field trip earlier this year, and she opened up her little hand and had quarters she had taken out of her piggy bank because she wanted to make sure no students missed the field trip because they didn’t have any money,” Wasinger said, adding Mahala is the first to help somebody in need and the first to reach out to students who need a friend.

Mahala displayed a shy smile when she received her gift certificate and trophy and then proceeded to shake hands with Superintendent Dean Katt and all seven board members.

Mahala told Hays Post she was happy to receive the award.

Sonya Herl thanks the board and her collegues as she receives USD 489's "Best of the Best" staff award.

“I feel very excited. I feel like I am going to keep on doing it, and I am just so thankful,” Mahala said.

O’Loughlin Principal Nancy Harman nominated Herl, a teacher for 24 years,  for the Best of Best staff member award.

Harmon said Herl “brings the joy of learning for herself and her students that has a lasting impact” that goes beyond the classroom.

“I feel like I am in the Best of the Best school,” Herl said as she thanked the board for choosing her from among several nominations. “Everyone around me during the school day makes me want to challenge myself and be good because we have an excellent staff and a principal who leads.”

“I just like being around children and seeing them blossom and become whatever they want to be,” she added.

Chiefs’ Smith sustained shoulder injury vs Rams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith played through a sprained throwing shoulder that he sustained just before halftime of Sunday’s 34-7 rout of the St. Louis Rams.

Smith never mentioned the injury in his postgame remarks, and it wasn’t until Chiefs coach Andy Reid brought it up Monday that anybody learned of it outside the Kansas City locker room.

Reid said that Smith landed on his shoulder but played through the pain. The game was still very much in the balance when the injury happened, the Chiefs leading just 10-7 at the break.

Smith went through a series of examinations Monday. Reid said the quarterback is “tender” and declined to say whether he will miss any practice time this week.

The Chiefs play the New York Jets on Sunday.
