Roberts’ primary foe urges Kansans to vote for him

Milton Wolf and Sen. Pat Roberts

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts is getting a somewhat reluctant endorsement from his former Republican primary challenger, Milton Wolf.

In a message posted Thursday on his campaign Facebook page, Wolf urges his supporters to set aside their differences with Roberts and vote for the Republican incumbent in next Tuesday’s election.

Roberts is in a close race with independent candidate Greg Orman.

Wolf criticized Roberts as out-of-touch during the primary. But his Facebook message says Roberts’ election could be the deciding factor on whether Republicans take control of the Senate, which he says could put other “solid constitutional conservatives” in positions of power.

If Roberts is re-elected, Wolf writes that he will “hold his feet to the fire” and continue to “see to it that Kansans have alternatives to failed leadership.”

KU institute serves lifelong learners

Screen Shot 2014-10-31 at 4.57.33 AMLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — An institute at the University of Kansas that serves lifelong learners is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Osher Institute offers classes on a variety of subjects, including movies, politics, history, arts, sports and technology. The courses generally consist of three two-hour sessions, taught by local experts.

Three thousand people took classes at the Osher Institute last year.

The institute also hosts special events, such as a recent overnight trip to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Topics planned for the spring include mental health care reform in America and the history of railroads during the Civil War. In the spring, the center also plans to start offering day-long sessions.

Kansas man pleads guilty in fatal crash

fatal crashWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita man has pleaded guilty in a drunken-driving car crash that killed his passenger.

The Wichita Eagle reports 56-year-old Melvin Day pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Thursday in connection to the March death of 54-year-old Kevin Donn Sr.

Donn died after the car slammed into a tree. Witnesses tell police the vehicle was speeding when the driver swerved to avoid crashing into a mail truck.

A Sedgwick County District Attorney spokesman says Day’s blood alcohol content level was nearly 3.5 times higher than the legal limit of 0.08 at the time of the crash.

Day is scheduled to be sentenced in December.

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

The Norton Bluejays used a 32 point first half to put the TMP Monarchs away 42-6 in the final regular season game Thursday night at Lewis Field in Hays. Norton ends their regular season 9-0 and will host Riley County in the first round of the 3A playoffs Tuesday. The Monarchs finish 0-9.

It was a tight 6-0 game after the first quarter but Norton exploded for 26 second quarter points and never looked back.

Bluejay quarterback Jordan Dole ran for three first half touchdowns while running back Jared Tallent ran for 197 yards and two touchdowns.

A bright spot for the Monarchs was a late touchdown pass from David McFarland to TJ Flax from 27 yards out.  The Monarchs lose seven seniors off of this year’s squad.

Alley cleanup at half-way mark

ALLEY-CLEANUPHAYS PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Alley Cleanup Day 4 is now complete, and crews are at or near 50% completion. The map available on the City’s website shows the progress thus far.

Crews will only make one pass through the City and will not return to an area to pick up additional items.

As in years past, the City WILL NOT pick up tires, hazardous waste, batteries, and medical waste. Tires should be disposed of at the Ellis County Landfill, and hazardous waste and batteries should be disposed of at the Ellis County Hazardous Waste Facility. Medical waste can be taken to the Ellis County Health Department. Please call 628-9460, 628-9449, or 628-9440 for detailed information.
Waste should be placed in four separate piles in preparation of the alley cleanup.

The piles should be organized in the following manner:

• 1. Tree limbs and brush (no longer than 12 ft. in length or 6″ in diameter) All yard and garden waste MUST be bagged to be collected!

• 2. Construction and Demolition Debris, i.e., lumber, drywall, bricks, sinks, wires, etc. (please pull or bend over nails and place small quantities of concrete, bricks, and plaster in containers)

• 3. White Goods/Metals, i.e., guttering, siding, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, metal swing sets, etc.

• 4. Municipal Waste (all other items), i.e., furniture, carpet, etc.

TO AVOID WRONGFUL PICK UP, “TREASURED ITEMS” SHOULD BE TAGGED OR REMOVED FROM THE COLLECTION AREA

NOTE: Alley cleanup is for City of Hays residential customers paying for refuse services.

Second-straight comeback win pushes FHSU women’s soccer win streak to five

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State pushed its win streak to five matches on Thursday evening (Oct. 30) in Kearney, Neb., with a 4-1 comeback win. The Tigers moved to 11-4-2 overall and 9-2-2 in the MIAA with the win, while the Lopers fell to 4-11-2 and 4-8-1 in the MIAA.

Nebraska-Kearney took the early lead in the match with a goal at 7:51 by Meaghan Pasbrig, but the Tigers found the equalizer just before the half at 42:31 as Mallory Diedrich bent a corner kick all the way into the goal.

Diederich, one of Fort Hays State’s defenders, was not done with her scoring act as she put the Tigers in front at 61:03 on an 18-yard kick from the right side of the box. That would be the start of a three-goal half for the Tigers as they ran away to earn a regular season sweep over the Lopers.

At 81:59, Hailey Davey added a goal from about 20 yards out on a breakaway after an assist from Hannah Smith. Fiorella Fustagno put an exclamation point on the win with a goal at 88:22 on a kick from the right side of the box from about 12 yards out. Jasmine Beaulieu notched an assist on the goal.

The Tigers doubled up the Lopers in shots in the match, 14-7. Goalkeeper Kristen Thompson moved to 11-4-2 on the season, making three saves.

Fort Hays State wraps up the regular season at home on Sunday (Nov. 2) when it hosts Washburn at FHSU Soccer Stadium. Match time is set for 3:30 pm and the five seniors on the squad will be recognized prior to the match.

The Tigers have locked up hosting a first-round conference tournament match, which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 6 pm. Opponent is still to be determined following the final weekend of conference play.

Sleuths have new hope in search for Earhart plane

Earharat

OXFORD, Pa. (AP) — A suburban Philadelphia group trying to solve the Amelia Earhart mystery has new reason to think a piece of aluminum found on a Pacific atoll came from her lost plane.

The Philly.com website reports Thursday that rivet holes on the 2-foot-wide piece seem to match the design of a window patch made on Earhart’s plane before her 1937 flight.

Ric Gillespie of Oxford heads The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. The group of experts and enthusiasts has made 10 trips to the remote Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro where some think Earhart’s Lockheed Electra went down.

Gillespie says he’s more convinced than ever after inspecting a similar Electra being restored in Kansas.

He and other experts and enthusiasts will return to the island in June for another research trip

No. 22 FHSU men’s soccer ties Upper Iowa in final MIAA game of regular season

FHSU Athletics

No. 22 Fort Hays State played to its second consecutive draw on Thursday (Oct. 30), tying Upper Iowa, 1-1, in Fayette, Iowa.

The Tigers (11-3-3, 8-2-2 MIAA) extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games with the draw, which closed out the conference portion of its schedule.

After over 75 minutes of scoreless play, Fort Hays State grabbed a lead in the 79th minute when Brian Ness netted his third goal of the season. Austin Clifton assisted the play, firing a shot of his own that rebounded off the crossbar into Ness’ possession, who scored the game’s first goal.

As regulation wore down, Upper Iowa tied the match at 87:59 – sending the teams to overtime after Johnny McBeth’s seventh goal of the year.

Tanner Brock and Clifton led the team with three shots on the afternoon, each putting one on goal, while Joe Albright and Addison Pauler had two shots apiece.

Goalkeeper Kent Frenud picked up seven saves on the afternoon, allowing one goal in 110 minutes played.

The Tigers have locked up a berth to the MIAA postseason, beginning Nov. 6 in Olathe, Kan., and were the No. 2 team in the most recent NCAA Central Region rankings, released Wednesday.

FHSU returns to Hays on Sunday (Nov. 2) for Senior Day, taking on West Texas A&M at 1 p.m.

Kobach predicts 50 percent turnout in midterm vote

voteTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach predicts turnout for Tuesday’s elections will be about 50 percent, even without more than 20,000 people on a suspended voters list because they haven’t provided proof of citizenship.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Kobach on Thursday predicted about 872,000 people will vote out of about 1.74 million registered voters. The prediction is based in part on the pace of advance voting and high interest in the gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races.

Kobach’s Democratic challenger Jean Schodorf says the prediction probably is accurate, but notes it’s lower than in previous midterm elections. Turnout in 2006 was 52 percent, and in 2002 it was 53 percent.

Kobach’s numbers indicate a little less than 9 percent of all registered voters already have cast ballots through advance voting.

Fearing Ebola? Doctors say get a flu shot

syringe shot needleCHICAGO (AP) — Hospital doctors and nurses say there are a lot of people turning up at the E-R, thinking they have Ebola.

At a medical conference in Chicago, they’ve been swapping stories — including one about an Ohio woman who thought she had Ebola simply because her husband had worked in Dallas, but not with the Ebola patient. Then there was a New Mexico woman who sought ER testing for Ebola because she had visited Africa two years ago. And two patients in Alabama were worried they were infected after traveling through an airport in Atlanta, the same city where Ebola patients were treated.

Even though the chances are astronomically higher that people actually have the flu or some other bug, Ebola can’t always be automatically ruled out. So a patient with the flu could trigger a full-court press in the ER — with the patient being isolated, and ER staff grabbing the hazmat suits.

Doctors say it’s one reason why it’s especially important for people to get their flu shots this year. Fewer flu cases could mean fewer Ebola false-alarms tying up staff and resources in busy emergency rooms.

First lady launches 2 graduation video contests

STACY A. ANDERSON, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — High school and college students are competing for Michelle Obama to come to their schools to share her wisdom as they move on to higher education and adulthood.

The first lady announced on Thursday two graduation video contests as part of her Reach Higher initiative, which encourages students to take their studies and training past secondary school.

To enter the first, high school students, teachers and administrators create a video that urges students to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

The second contest— the Near-Peer Mentoring College Challenge— asks college officials and student groups to submit a video that shows peer-mentoring and college-immersion programs offered on their campuses for incoming students.

Mrs. Obama will speak at the winners’ commencement ceremonies next spring.
