Hays Football Struggles In Loss To Buhler

By Dustin Armbruster

The Hays versus Buhler game on Friday night was one of the marquee match-ups in the state of Kansas in week seven of the high school football season. #2 Hays and #4 Buhler met for the first time since 2003 in a game that opened up district play for each squad. Buhler struck first on a 4 play 76 yard drive and led 7-0 with 9:40 remaining in the first quarter. Hays would answer 9 plays later when Alex Delton hit Hayden Kreutzer on a 23 yard pass to convert on 4th down and goal from the 23.

From that point on it would be all Buhler. The Crusaders scored 28 unanswered points to take 35-14 lead. They would score on their first five possessions of the game. While Hays was trying to keep pace, Hays turned the ball over twice inside the redzone. Hays would tight then scored to 35-14 right before half time with a Delton to Keith Dryden 69 yard pass play.

Buhler though controlled the entire second half allowing Hays just one third quarter possession en route to the 55-21 victory.

The loss drops Hays to 6-1 on the season, while Buhler has won six in a row and also is 6-0. The standings that matter the most however is the district record. Hays is 0-1 in district play and will face the other 0-1 team in district eight, the Abilene Cowboys. Abilene also suffered their first loss of the season Friday night when they lost to McPherson 17-6.

Hays did total 451 yards, throwing for 317 and rushing for 134. Delton through the air was 14-27 for 286 yards and three scores, but also threw three interceptions. Kreuzter caught six passes for 123 yards and one score. Keith Dryden hauled in four passes for 126 yards and two scores.

Buhler was led by junior quarterback Jace Williams who ran 27 times for 318 yards and three scores. Williams also was 7-9 through the air for 158 yards and one touchdown.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan is urging Kansans to back Republican Sen. Pat Roberts in a tight re-election race, saying the three-term incumbent isn’t a “rubber stamp” for President Barack Obama.

Appearing Friday at a hotel in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Ryan is the latest in a string of high profile Republicans to stump for the 78-year-old senator. Attention on the race intensified when the Democratic candidate dropped out, improving independent candidate Greg Orman’s odds.

Republicans need a net gain of six seats to recapture a majority and had always counted on Roberts winning re-election. He’s seeking to unify the GOP behind him by highlighting his opposition to Obama and Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid. Orman says he’ll caucus with whichever party has a clear majority.

Embattled GM legal chief retiring

Michael Millikin
Michael Millikin during July’s hearing

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors’ chief lawyer Michael Millikin, who withstood withering criticism from lawmakers for his department’s handling of an ignition switch recall, is retiring early next year.

GM says in a statement that the 66-year-old Millikin will stay on until a replacement is on the job.

During a July Senate hearing on the delayed recall of small cars with faulty switches, lawmakers demanded that Millikin be fired. One senator called the failure of GM’s legal department “stunning.” Millikin said he didn’t learn of the problem until this year.

At least 27 people died in crashes linked to the switches. GM has admitted knowing about them a decade ago, yet it didn’t recall the cars until this year.

CEO Mary Barra praised Millikin as a man of impeccable integrity and unwavering loyalty.

Kansas Guard member being honored for heroism

Kansas national guard Adujant GeneralWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas National Guard member will be honored next week for helping save a woman from a burning house in Wichita two years ago.

Tech. Sgt. Shawn A. Rucker will receive the Airman’s Medal from Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the Kansas adjutant general. The ceremony will take place Monday at McConnell Air Force Base.

Rucker serves with the Guard’s 184th Intelligence Wing. Officials say he was driving home the night of Nov. 24, 2012, when he noticed a large plume of smoke and followed it to a house partly engulfed in flames.

Two people were on the porch, but a woman was still inside. Rucker and one of the homeowners found her asleep in the basement and carried her to safety.

The Airman’s Medal is awarded for heroic, dangerous actions that don’t involve combat.

Democrat slams plan giving state Medicare control

Selzer and Anderson

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The Democratic nominee for Kansas insurance commissioner is deriding a proposed multi-state health care compact that would give the state control of Medicare within its borders.

Dennis Anderson spoke Friday at a candidate forum in Wichita with Republican nominee Ken Selzer, who is backing the plan as a way to get Medicare out of the federal government.

Anderson says he hasn’t found any senior citizens who are unhappy with the way their Medicare is handled now.

Selzer says the proposed compact has built-in safeguards and would bring decision-making closer to home.

Anderson and Selzer are vying to succeed incumbent Republican insurance commissioner Sandy Praeger, who is not seeking re-election. Friday’s forum was hosted by the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents.

kansasspeaks

In the perennial question of how they feel about Kansas as a place to live, a strong majority, 85 percent, of respondents say Kansas is at least a “good” place to live, and only 3 percent said it is a “poor” or “very poor” place to live. The rating was higher among Republican respondents and respondents who were Asian or white.

However, while half of respondents, 50 percent, said the Kansas economy is at least in good condition, 61 percent are “very” or “moderately concerned” that economic conditions in Kansas will threaten their families’ welfare.

When asked about Kansas government spending only, 29 percent of respondents said that Kansas government spending should be increased, 35 percent said it should be decreased, and 37 percent said it should “remain the same.” When asked about Kansas government spending together with taxation, 50 percent of respondents favor “somewhat” or “much lower” taxes and spending, 24 percent favored “somewhat” or “much higher” taxes and spending, and 26 percent favored “no change.”

Some other findings in the 2014 survey:

• Two-thirds (66 percent) of respondents favored increasing taxes on large corporations. The support for increasing taxes was higher among Democrats, Independent voters leaning Democratic and Independent voters.

• More than half (58%) of respondents favored “increasing” taxes on top income earners. Republicans and less-educated respondents tended to be more supportive of lower taxes on top income earners. Only 7 percent of respondents favored higher taxes on the middle class.
