Dissident GOP group grows in Kansas governor race

Brownback and Davis

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Democratic challenger Paul Davis says a group of dissident Republicans backing him in the Kansas governor’s race has grown to more than 500 members.

Davis said at an Overland Park community center Tuesday that Republicans for Kansas Values added more than 300 educators, superintendents and local school board members. He also said more former GOP elected officials have joined the group.

Davis received national attention in July when his campaign announced the group’s founding with more than 100 mostly former GOP elected officials.

His race with Gov. Sam Brownback is now a tossup.

Kansas Republican Party Executive Director Clay Barker dismissed Tuesday’s announcement as insignificant and the re-airing of old Davis campaign themes.

Brownback had two campaign events with former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina on Tuesday.

FHSU’s Thompson named MIAA Co-Goalkeeper of the Week

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State’s Kristen Thompson was named the MIAA Women’s Soccer Co-Goalkeeper of the Week, sharing the award with Central Oklahoma’s Brandi Bartley, announced Tuesday (Oct. 14) by the conference office.

Thompson posted two shutouts last weekend, helping the Tigers go 1-0-1 in conference play. Thompson played all 200 minutes in goal, saving 11 shots and lowering her goals against average to 0.70. Sunday’s shutout draw versus Central Oklahoma was Thompson’s seventh clean sheet of the year, breaking the school record for individual shutouts in a season. A Manhattan, Kan., native, Thompson has played every minute in goal for FHSU this season, compiling a 6-4-2 record while recording 58 saves and allowing just nine goals through 12 games. Thompson’s 0.70 goals against average ranks fourth in the MIAA this season.

The award is the first career MIAA Athlete of the Week for Thompson, and the second MIAA Athlete of the Week award for FHSU this season. Jordan Hester was named MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week on Sept. 9.

With the ruling, the juvenile case is dismissed and new charges will be field. District Attorney Keith Schroeder says he plans to have formal charges filed by Tuesday afternoon.

KDOT chief unveils $10M in bridge funding during Hays event

Kansas Department of Transportation

Cities and counties receiving funding under a Kansas Department of Transportation program designed to reduce the number of deficient bridges on local road system have been selected. The recipients of 77 local bridge projects were announced by KDOT Secretary Mike King today in Hays.

Seventy-five counties and two cities will receive a combined total of more than $10 million in state funding under the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program. Under this new program, the state contributes 90 percent of the total project cost, and the local public authority contributes 10 percent. The state funds are capped at $120,000 or $160,000 if the local jurisdiction chooses to remove a second structure.
KDOT is providing funding to improve, replace or rehabilitate locally-owned, deficient bridges in order to improve the overall transportation system in Kansas. This bridge program targets bridges with a daily vehicle count of less than 100 and a length of 20 to 50 feet.

“This program proved to be extremely popular,” King said. “Every local community that applied for funding and was qualified is receiving funding. These bridges might have low traffic numbers but they are important to the farmers that use them to get their equipment to fields and crops to market.”

There are approximately 20,000 bridges on Kansas’ local road systems and about 18 percent of those are structurally deficient. Of those, about 1,800 to 1,900 bridges fall within the target range for length and traffic.

Police: Cowboys RB, Kansas native Randle arrested on theft charge

DALLAS (AP) — Police in suburban Dallas say Cowboys running back Joseph Randle has been arrested after taking underwear and cologne from a mall department store without paying.

Randle played at Southeast High School in Wichita before playing at Oklahoma State.

Frisco Police Sgt. Brad Merritt says Randle is charged with Class B misdemeanor theft. He was detained Monday evening by store security before being arrested and booked into the Frisco city jail. Merritt says Randle posted bond early Tuesday.

A request for comment was not immediately returned by the Cowboys organization.

The 22-year-old Randle is a second-year pro. Randle’s player page on the Cowboys website shows he had 54 carries his rookie season for 164 yards and two touchdowns. So far this season he has 16 carries for 113 yards as a backup to DeMarco Murray.

KFIX Rock News: Queen Debut Clips Of Unreleased Tracks

queen-forever-trailer-unreleased-songs-330x220Queen Forever, the upcoming compilation that features three previously unreleased Queen tracks, doesn’t hit stores until November 10, but you can hear segments of a number of the tunes now in a new trailer for the album.

The two-minute, 18-second clip can be viewed at the band’s official YouTube channel.

The video includes snippets of all three unreleased songs featured on the record — “There Must Be More to Life than This,” “Love Kills” and “Let Me in Your Heart Again” — as well as segments from several other tracks.

“There Must Be More to Life than This” is one of two famous recordings that Queen frontman Freddie Mercury made with Michael Jackson.  It was recorded during the band’s Hot Space sessions, but the backing track was never completed.  Queen brought in producer William Orbit to finish the song for the project.

“Love Kills,” meanwhile, was a song Mercury wrote for the soundtrack to the 1984 restored version of the 1927 sci-fi film Metropolis, while “Let Me in Your Heart Again” was an unfinished composition from the 1984 Queen album, The Works.

The trailer also includes snippets of Queen classics and gems like “Love of My Life,” “You’re My Best Friend,” “A Winter’s Tale,” “Born to Love You,” “Bijou” and “Who Wants to Live Forever.”

The music is accompanied by a montage of video clips and concert footage from throughout the band’s career.

Queen Forever will be available as a 20-track single CD and as a 36-track two-CD set.

Kansas State Salina expands pilot program

KSU SalinaSALINA, Kan. (AP) — A pilot degree program offered through Kansas State University Salina will expand to the Kansas City area.

The university announced Monday that the expanded program will start next year.

Students will be able to take flight training from Air Associates in Olathe, general-education classes from Johnson County Community College, and other classes online from Kansas State Salina. Court hears water dispute between Kansas, Nebraska

SAM HANANEL, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is considering how to resolve a long-running legal fight between Kansas and Nebraska over the use of water from the Republican River.

The justices on Tuesday appeared to agree with recommendations of a special master who found Nebraska should pay $3.7 million in damages to Kansas for using more than its legal share of the river’s water in 2005 and 2006.

But they were more doubtful about making Nebraska pay a $1.8 million penalty that exceeds Kansas’ actual damages. The justices also seemed skeptical about Nebraska’s push to change the formula for measuring water consumption. Nebraska says the formula is unfair.

The dispute centers on a 1943 compact that allocates 49 percent of the river’s water to Nebraska, 40 percent to Kansas and 11 percent to Colorado.

Chrysler recalls SUVs for air bag defect

RecallDETROIT (AP) — Chrysler is recalling 184,215 SUVs worldwide because a wiring problem could disable their air bags and seat belt pretensioners.

The recall involves the 2014 model year Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Most are in the U.S., but 57,443 SUVs are in Canada, Mexico and elsewhere.

Chrysler says a short circuit in the restraint control module could cause the air bag warning lamps to illuminate. If that happens, the air bags and seat belt pretensioners may not work. Pretensioners tighten belts during a crash to hold occupants in place.

Chrysler says it’s unaware of any injuries related to the problem.

Ford recalled 850,000 vehicles last month for the same issue. Both companies used restraint control modules made by auto supplier Bosch.

Chrysler dealers will replace the modules for free.
