Hundreds of people from across the state will be attending the fourth annual “Confronting Violence in Our Community,” Summit and Forensic Symposium Tuesday and Wednesday at Hays Medical Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days.

The event is co-hosted by Jana’s Campaign, Options Domestic and Sexual Violence and Hays Medical Center.

Day one will explore how gender-based violence and human trafficking are connected. The second day will focus on the forensics protocol when victims of human trafficking and sexual violence seek medical attention.

The annual summit was started by Options and Jana’s Campaign, co-founded by Curt and Christie Brungardt of Hays, whose daughter Jana Mackey was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 2008 in Lawrence.

Christie Brungardt said she’d never considered how closely linked gender-based violence and human trafficking are until attending a conference last year in Wichita.

“Even though human trafficking has always been something I thought that happens a long ways away,  as it ends up it is happening right here in Kansas, and in fact, right here in rural Kansas,” Brungardt said.

“It’s just that none of us know what to look for, we don’t know the signs (of human trafficking), we don’t know what that looks like in the community, and we certainly don’t know how to to respond and most of us have never really considered that intersection of gender-based violence and sexual assault,” Brungardt said.

The summit includes speakers from Wichita’s Center for Combating Human Trafficking and the Kansas Attorney General’s office with topics such as spotting the signs of human trafficking,  law enforcement protocol, community outreach services and more.

Brungardt said the summit is for anyone who is interested in preventing gender-based violence and human trafficking such as teachers, parents, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, social workers and counselors.

Rent-to-own business to pay $28 million settlement

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California attorney general has announced a $28 million settlement with a furniture and computer rental business that allegedly violated consumer protection and privacy laws.

Kamala Harris said Monday that Aaron’s Inc. overcharged customers, omitted important contract disclosures and installed software that could spy on laptop computer users.

The Atlanta-based business is the nation’s second-largest rent-to-own business. It operates approximately 75 stores in California.

Harris says about 100,000 customers are eligible for $25 million in refunds for leases signed over the past four years. The company also will pay $3.4 million in civil penalties and fees.

A spokeswoman says the company admitted no wrongdoing or liability and was committed to following the law.

Aaron’s last year settled a case with the Federal Trade Commission over spyware installed on computers.

The Vancouver Colombian reports booking company Northwest Events and Marketing paid Nugent the settlement after his appearance at the Clark County Fair in Washington State was canceled.

When Nugent’s appearance was announced in April, critics circulated a petition to get Nugent off the bill.

State fair organizers say the cancellation was not because of the petition but because of a contractual conflict.

ACLU seeks to force Kansas to allow gay marriages

ACLU LogoTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union is seeking a federal court order to force Kansas to allow same-sex couples to marry as the group challenges the state constitution’s ban on gay marriage.

The ACLU filed its request Monday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kansas, only three days after it filed a lawsuit in Wichita and Lecompton in Douglas County on behalf of lesbian couples who unsuccessfully sought marriage licenses.

The ACLU is requesting a preliminary injunction and an order temporarily restraining the state from enforcing its ban on gay marriage.

The lawsuit came after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear appeals from five states seeking to save their gay-marriage bans. The states included Oklahoma and Utah, which are in the same appeals court circuit as Kansas.

CDC urges all US hospitals to ‘think Ebola’

CDC logoWASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health authorities are telling the nation’s hospitals to “think Ebola.”

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden is urging hospitals to watch for patients with fever or symptoms of Ebola who have traveled from the three Ebola-stricken African nations in the past 21 days. He spoke Monday after a nurse in Dallas became the first person to catch the disease within the United States. She had treated a Liberian man who died at the hospital after bringing the disease from Liberia.

The CDC is now monitoring all hospital workers who treated the Liberian man. Frieden says he wouldn’t be surprised if another hospital worker who cared for that patient when he was very sick becomes ill. Ebola patients become more contagious as the disease progresses.

Contract talks between union, Textron end abruptly

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 11.23.02 AMWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Machinists union official says contract talks with Wichita’s Textron Aviation have fallen apart and the company has vowed to outsource work to other states.

The Wichita Eagle reports a vote on a new contract was supposed to happen on Wednesday, but on Sunday negotiators for Textron walked out of a meeting when pushed to put in writing that the company would keep jobs in Wichita.

Textron is the parent company of Cessna and in March bought Beechcraft and formed Textron Aviation.

Machinists District 70 spokesman Frank Molina says the company suggested it wanted to negotiate a single contract for job protection, so stating in writing it would keep jobs in Wichita seemed like a no-brainer.

A Textron Aviation spokeswoman did not immediately returns calls Monday seeking comment.
