Drugmaker provides experimental drug for Ebola use

FDAWASHINGTON (AP) — A North Carolina drugmaker says it is providing an experimental antiviral drug for patients with Ebola, an emergency step authorized by the Food and Drug Administration.

Chimerix Inc. says physicians sought federal permission to use company’s drug, called brincidofovir, which is in late-stage testing for other types of viruses. The company did not identify the physicians making the request.

Last Tuesday doctors in Dallas diagnosed the first U.S. case of Ebola in a man who recently arrived from Liberia.

Brincidofovir is an oral antiviral drug being tested to fight more common viruses, including one that infects patients undergoing bone marrow transplants. Laboratory tests suggested it might also fight Ebola.

Two other experimental drugs developed specifically for Ebola have been used in American patients. None have been approved by the FDA.

County commissioners reject birth-control pill

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — Saline County commissioners have removed a birth-control pill called Portia from a list of items the county health department wants to purchase with a $1,032 grant from the state Department of Health and Environment.

Bronson Farmer, director of the Saline County Health Department, plans to ask the commission on Tuesday that the grant be used to purchase birth control pills that have been approved by commissioners as stock becomes low.

The Salina Journal reports county health department officials indicated last week they wanted to spend the grant money on Portia, which is not currently in stock. But Commissioner John Price objected to the brand and said it could be used as a “morning after” pill.

New Revenue Department center goes live on Tuesday

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Customers of the Kansas Department of Revenue are gaining access this week to a new online customer service center where they can access their accounts and make payments.

The department says the Kansas Customer Service Center will be accessible starting Tuesday from the Online Services link on the department’s website.

Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan says the change means customers will need to remember only one email address and password combination to access their accounts.

Because of the conversion all Department of Revenue accounts were offline on Monday so data could be moved to the new site. The accounts will be available again at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

DAVE SAYS: You can’t afford the master’s degree!

Dear Dave,
My husband makes about $35,000 a year before taxes, and we have one child. We’ve also got a mortgage and $60,000 in student loan debt. About a year ago, my husband started work on a master’s degree, because he thinks he wants to teach when he retires.

He quit school after the baby was born, because he didn’t think we could afford it any longer. I think he should finish the degree. Otherwise, he’s just throwing away the $10,000 we’ve already got invested in the program. What do you think?
Amanda

Dear Amanda,
You guys need to clean up the mess you’ve made before he goes after his master’s degree. You might be able to justify it if the degree immediately raised his income, but you two can’t afford to make investments in vague educational goals right now.

If you want to call it throwing the money away, then yeah, throw it away. But I’m not sure the money has been wasted. The classes he has already taken are complete and on record, so why can’t he finish the degree somewhere down the road? You guys have done a poor job of planning, and now you need to climb out of a big hole before you do anything else.

The point is not the $10,000, Amanda. The point is that you’re barely making ends meet. You’ve already got a house payment and $60,000 in student loan debt hanging over your heads, not to mention the added expense of a baby in the house. The last thing you need is to go even deeper into debt for something he won’t even use until retirement. That’s just silly.

I’m all for education, but you’ve got to plan things and get a better payback on your educational spending. That’s when it becomes an investment. But he doesn’t need to even think about a master’s degree until you guys have first straightened out your finances!
—Dave

KFIX Rock News: Sammy Hagar Talks Details Of Upcoming Acoustic Album

SammyHagarLiteRoast630_100214Full details have been announced about Sammy Hagar’s latest solo album, an acoustic collection titled Lite Roast, which will be released on October 13.

The 11-track disc features unplugged renditions of songs from throughout the Red Rocker’s career, recorded with guitar and vocal accompaniment from Vic Johnson of Hagar’s longtime backing group The Wabos.

Lite Roast includes versions of a pair of classic Van Halen tunes, “Dreams” and “Finish What Ya Started,” as well as stripped-down renditions of tunes that appeared on the following Hagar solo efforts: 1987’s I Never Said Goodbye, 1997’s Marching to Mars, 1999’s Red Voodoo, 2000’s Ten 13, 2006’s Livin’ It Up and 2013’s Sammy Hagar & Friends.

Sammy recently told ABC News Radio that the inspiration behind Lite Roast came to him while rehearsing for the star-studded Acoustic-4-a-Cure benefit concert he and Metallica’s James Hetfield organized earlier this year in San Francisco.

“Working up that set for myself, I learned how to play and sing acoustically, and I loved it so much I just took a bunch of my old songs and made a record,” Hagar explained.  “It’s an acoustically brewed CD.”

He added about the unplugged versions of his tunes, “Some of them I think are better than they’ve ever been like this.”

On Wednesday, October 1, Hagar and Johnson played a free acoustic set featuring songs from the new record at the Sammy’s Island Bar & Grill franchise in Roseville, California.  Parts of the concert were filmed for a television special that will raise money for the community of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which was severely damaged last month by Hurricane Odile.

Here is the full track list of Lite Roast:

“Red Voodoo” (from Red Voodoo)
“One Sip” (from Livin’ It Up!)

ACLU to challenge Kansas gay marriage ban

ACLU LogoWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A decision by the nation’s highest court is expected to clear the way for the expansion soon of same-sex marriages to Kansas.

The U.S. Supreme Court turned away appeals from five states seeking to prohibit gay and lesbian unions. The American Civil Liberties Union says that since the appeals from Oklahoma and Utah originated in the 10th Circuit, the decision in those cases will affect states in that circuit, including Kansas.

The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri says it plans to file a lawsuit soon asking a federal judge to block the Kansas law prohibiting gay marriage.

Thomas Witt, the executive director of Equality Kansas, says marriage equality is coming to Kansas, and that it may not be this morning, but perhaps another morning very soon.

Ellis Co. expected to pick priority for road improvement north of I-70

Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Mike King

Hays Post

After weeks of consideration, the Ellis County Commission is expected to identify a road project to present to the Kansas Department of Transportation for financial assistance.

The county has identified 55th Street, 230th Avenue and Feedlot Road — all in an area of growth north of Interstate 70 — as routes that need upgraded because of increased traffic.

But when KDOT Secretary Mike King was in Hays earlier this year, he instructed the county to choose one project to submit for financial assistance.

At an earlier meeting,  commissioners suggested 55th Street between U.S. 183 and 230th avenue and 230th avenue from I-70 to an area about 1,000 feet north of 55th.

In other agenda items, commissioners will:

• Discuss leasing a phone and data system for the N.E.W. building from Nex-Tech.

• Discuss the construction contract with MW Builders on the courthouse and Law Enforcement Center project.

Monday’s meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Ellis County Courthouse Commission meeting room. For a complete agenda, click HERE.

Texas Sen. Cruz endorsing Kansas Sen. Roberts

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Tea party movement icon and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has endorsed the re-election of Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts and is planning to help his fellow Republican kick off a four-day bus tour.

The Roberts campaign announced Cruz’s endorsement Monday. It also said that Cruz plans to travel Thursday to Wichita to launch the bus tour, which includes stops in 11 communities.

Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn also is planning to join Roberts for five bus-tour events Thursday and Friday.

Roberts is seeking his fourth term in the Senate and is in a tough race against independent candidate and Olathe businessman Greg Orman.

Orman’s campaign said campaigning with Cruz shows that Roberts is, in its words, “an enthusiastic participant in a broken system” in Washington.

Officials say ‘tornado days’ not likely in Kansas schools

NOAA tornadoWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Officials in Oklahoma have been talking about whether to institute “tornado days” in which classes would be called off when the threat of tornadoes is unusually high.

The Wichita Eagle reports their Kansas counterparts say they haven’t even considered such a move, which could create more problems than it solves.

Nine schoolchildren were killed in May 2013 when a tornado tore through Moore, Oklahoma. A researcher says prior to that, the last tornado death during a school day in Oklahoma came in 1930.

Schools in Mississippi and Alabama have tornado day policies in place, but it’s not likely the practice will spread to Kansas. Wichita school officials say part of the reason is that they’re reluctant to encourage parents to come get their children during tornado warnings.

Mall developer: National chains would make Hays home after renovation

hays mall still

By NICK BUDD
Hays Post

If you fix it, they will come? That’s what mall developers are saying about national retailers who they say are targeting Hays for potential expansion.

In recent weeks, representatives from DP Management, the management group for the Hays Mall, have been in talks with the Hays City Commission regarding a proposed community improvement district on the mall property.

If approved, the CID would add a 1 percent sales tax on sales generated at the mall, with the the income would be used for facility upgrades. Proposed improvements include renovations to the interior, entrances, landscaping and parking lots. Mall developers also plan to demolish the bank drive-through and the former Montana Mike’s Building.

Though he is unable to identify specific retailers, project manager Josh Vickery told Hays Post he is confident that, if those renovations occur, more national chains will come to the location.

“We’ve had several chains that have indicated strong interest if the mall was redeveloped,” Vickery said. “If you go in there right now, the lighting is outdated and dark the floors are old, and it’s just not very appealing to a lot of the national chains that want some upgrades and new features.”

According to Vickery, some chains already have signed a letter of intent, which isn’t legally binding but does outline the rent structure and other details. Those letters, however, are contingent upon whether the redevelopment plan is approved. DP was unable to identify the businesses that have shown interest due to legal reasons.

“We’re very confident that there are several national tenants that would be very interested if the project was completed,” Vickery said.

Commissioners and residents have voiced concerns about the proposed plan, noting several other businesses have reinvested their own money into their operations. Vickery noted the current ownership group acquired the mall in its current state in 2005 and that ongoing maintenance issues have been identified as part of the redevelopment plan.

“(The CID) can find out whether the owner can justify further investment by identifying a reasonable likelihood of a return on that investment,” Vickery said. “The passage of the CID is no guarantee that the owners would be repaid, it is just an opportunity to recapture the investment over time, if they manage the facility well enough to get people to patronize them.”

Vickery also noted that the CID is very “discretionary,” stressing the additional 1 percent sales tax only would apply to those who shop at the mall.

“If consumers aren’t in favor of the tax, they may choose to exercise their displeasure by patronizing other establishments,” he said.

The Hays City Commission voted 3-2 last month to schedule an Oct. 23 public hearing on the proposed CID.
