As Fort Hays State University’s Power of One scholarship campaign nears its deadline to raise $12 million by Dec. 31,  Tim Chapman, CEO and president of the FHSU Foundation, announced Tuesday another major gift will be unveiled next week.

The Dec. 3 announcement will bolster the fund that has raised $11.6 million in scholarship money in less than a year.

Chapman is not saying whether the scheduled gift will bring the campaign to its goal, but did say the Power of One has already set a foundation record for the amount of money raised in such a short time.

“The campaign was structured really in celebration of Dr. (Edward) Hammond’s 27 years at Fort Hays State … and to try to leverage Ed’s impact on Fort  Hays over the past 27 years,” Chapman said. “I think it’s just really a great reflection of how people felt about his leadership and what he’s done for our community and for the state of Kansas, and we gave (the community) the opportunity.

“They’ve knocked the ball out of the park.”

Chapman said the university plans a huge celebration if the $12 million goal is reached.

The Power of One scholarship campaign was announced last December with a goal of raising $8 million by the end of Dec. 31, but that amount was reached in June and a new goal of $12 million was established.
