Woman, man charged in Wichita Batman robberies

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 5.32.16 AMWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities have charged a Wichita woman who they say stole cigarettes and cash from convenience stores while wearing a blue Batman mask.

The Wichita Eagle reports 22-year-old Hailey Baughman and 23-year-old Justin Allen have were charged Wednesday with two counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery. Police say Baughman robbed the stores and Allen drove the getaway car. They claimed to be unemployed and common-law spouses in court filings.

They say the duo is responsible for two robberies in three days.

A third robbery was foiled on Saturday by a clerk who drew a gun on the masked invader. The couple was arrested later that day.

Baughman and Allen are each being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on $25,000 bond. Online jail records didn’t indicate attorneys.

BERLIN (AP) — The European Space Agency has released the first picture taken by its Philae probe on the surface of a comet.

Philae became the first spacecraft to land on a comet when it touched down Wednesday on the comet, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The photo released Thursday shows a rocky surface with one of the lander’s three feet.

Harpoons meant to anchor the lander to the surface failed to work properly, causing Philae to bounce twice.

But ESA says the lander is stable. Gerhard Schwehm, a scientist on the Rosetta mission, told The Associated Press on Thursday that it may still be possible to fire the harpoons but in any case the lander is “very healthy.”

It’s unclear what caused the BNSF Railway cars to derail.

The railway didn’t immediately return a request for comment on Wednesday night.

Uncertainty clouds Kansas gay marriage ruling

marriage gayTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Even with the U.S. Supreme Court allowing gay marriage in Kansas, the court clerk in the state’s most populous county won’t grant licenses until Kansas’ highest court resolves a separate case.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s defense of the state’s gay-marriage ban remains a roadblock to same-sex weddings Thursday.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday denied a request from Kansas to prevent same-sex couples from marrying while the state fights the issue in court.

Schmidt contends the decision applies only in two counties where court clerks wouldn’t issue marriage licenses and were sued by the American Civil Liberties Union.

And he’s still pursuing a separate case before the Kansas Supreme Court. The Johnson County court clerk is refusing to issue licenses to same-sex couples pending a resolution of that case.

Roberts Meets with Senators-Elect; Renews Commitment to Repealing Obamacare

RobertsWASHINGTON, DC – As Ranking Member of the Senate Rules Committee, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) today met with the newly elected members of the United States Senate. After the orientation meeting, Senator Roberts released the following statement renewing his commitment to the full repeal of Obamacare. For audio of Senator Roberts’ statement CLICK HERE

“This is an inspiring group of newly elected Senators, and I’m looking forward to working alongside my new Republican colleagues to break the gridlock and deliver commonsense, conservative solutions for our country,” Senator Roberts said after the meeting.

“My first priority in the new Republican Senate is to repeal and replace Obamacare, a priority that is shared by many of my newly elected colleagues,” Roberts continued. “Obamacare is crushing our employers and driving up costs for patients. Just this week, many Americans are learning that the second year of Obamacare coverage will bring premium increases of nearly ten percent.

“Facts are stubborn things, and the fact is Obamacare has failed to live up to its paramount promise of reducing costs for patients. We must repeal Obamacare and start over, and I look forward to doing just that in the new Republican Senate Majority.”

Police arrested the woman Wednesday night. She faces a charge of theft of $25,000 to $100,000. Parents of children in the Sedgwick County squad say the program has been left in debt to other organizations and might not have funds to buy wind suits, trophies and backpacks for the girls.
