Kansas asks appeals court to stay marriage ruling

marriage gay

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is asking a federal appeals court to stay a judge’s preliminary injunction against the state enforcing its gay-marriage ban.

The state attorney general’s office filed the request Thursday with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, a day after appealing a ruling from U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree.

The judge ruled in lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union for two lesbian couples who were denied marriage licenses.

But Crabtree noted in his decision this week that the 10th Circuit has struck down similar bans in Oklahoma and Utah. Crabtree stayed his order until Tuesday to give the state a chance to appeal it.

Kansas wants Crabtree’s ruling stayed until the appeals court decides the case.

HealthCare.gov gets cybersecurity upgrades

Healthcare Healthcare.govWASHINGTON (AP) — Officials say HealthCare.gov has gotten cybersecurity upgrades ahead of a Nov. 15 start for the second open enrollment season under President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Andy Slavitt oversees the complex technology. Slavitt says the facility that hosts HealthCare.gov is now certified to meet rigorous government standards for cloud computing. Cloud operations use large networks of machines in different locations to handle data.

HealthCare.gov is also conducting daily security scans and weekly so-called “white-hat” hacking attempts that simulate real attacks. The Homeland Security department is also helping to bolster HealthCare.gov’s detection and defense capabilities.

The federal marketplace for subsidized private health insurance will serve 37 states this year. Cybersecurity is also getting scrutiny from critics. Last year’s chaotic debut of the program did not allow time to complete security testing.

FHSU men’s soccer falls to Lindenwood in MIAA tournament semifinals

FHSU Athletics

Second-seeded Fort Hays State saw its MIAA Tournament Championship hopes come to an end in the semifinals on Thursday (Nov. 6), dropping a 2-0 contest to third-seeded Lindenwood in Olathe, Kan.

The Tigers were active offensively, firing 12 shots throughout the contest, including seven in the first half, but couldn’t find the net and were shutout for just the fourth time this season. Defensively, FHSU limited LWU to one shot in the first half, and three shots on goal in the second.

Early on, the Tigers’ offense looked primed for a big game, firing five shots in the opening five minutes, including a header from David Lucio that nearly scored, only to be tipped past the crossbar by an extended LWU goalkeeper, Andrew Hamerlinck.  Soon after,Mauricio Castorino fired two shots from inside the box, but again Hamerlinck was there for both saves.

In the 23rd minute, LWU’s Alfredo Paez broke the scoreless tie with a header from inside the box, which skirted past Kent Freund for a goal.  Steven Hutchinson assisted on the score.

Michael Cole nearly tied it for FHSU at 58:35 after beating Hamerlinck to a ball near the top of the box, and while battling with a Lion defender, fired a shot that sailed just above the crossbar, keeping the deficit at one.

Soon after, though, LWU answered again.  On a breakaway, Freund played Paez’s shot well, but the deflected towards the top of the box was rebounded by Stefan Andric, who found an open net for the score.

Down 2-0, the Tigers couldn’t recover in the final 30 minutes of regulation, ending the postseason run early.

Castorino led the Tigers with three shots on the night. Lucio and Cole each had two shots.

In goal, Freund played all 90 minutes with two saves, both of which came in the second period.

FHSU will now await the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. to determine its NCAA Tournament status.

Get ready for crowded airports this Thanksgiving

airportThe Associated Press

If you’re flying somewhere for Thanksgiving, expect planes and airports to be even more crowded this year.

U.S. airlines expect to carry 24.6 million passengers over the 12 days surrounding Thanksgiving, up 1.5 percent from last year.

The worst day: The Sunday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 30, with 2.6 million people flying on U.S. airlines.

The forecast comes from Airlines for America, a trade group representing the biggest U.S. carriers. It covers Friday, Nov. 21 through Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The group’s chief economist said Thursday that rising personal incomes and job growth are helping boost demand for travel.

Last year, the airlines’ Thanksgiving-travel forecast turned out to be too high. The trade group blamed bad weather that caused widespread flight cancelations.

Tigers Remain No. 2 in Central Region Rankings

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State men’s soccer remains No. 2 in the last set of Central Region Rankings released by the NCAA on November 5. Following the MIAA Tournament this weekend in Olathe, Kan., two teams from the Central Region will be selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers are looking for their third-consecutive trip to the tournament.

Depite going 0-1-1 in the final week of the regular season, the Tigers still have a firm grip on the No. 2 ranking in the region, behind Northeastern State. The RiverHawks sit atop the rankings with a record of 14-3-1, while the Tigers enter postseason play at 11-4-3. There is a two-game gap in the loss column between Fort Hays State and the No. 3 ranked team, Lindenwood, which sits at 9-6-3 overall. Fort Hays State and Lindenwood match-up in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 6) at 4 pm. Fort Hays State went 2-0 against Lindenwood in the regular season with an 8-0 win at home and a 2-1 win in overtime on the road.

No automatic bid is given to the MIAA Tournament champion, so the Tigers look to solidify their spot in the national tournament this weekend in Olathe, Kan. The regional ranking formula is not released to the public, so how wide the gap between Fort Hays State and Lindenwood is unknown. Therefore the Tigers still need a win in the semifinal of the conference tournament to put any doubt out of mind.

The Central Region will serve as host for the Super Regional this year, which consists of the round of 16 and the national quarterfinals. Right now, Northeastern State is in the driver’s seat to host the Super Region for the second time in three years, which will begin two weeks from now. The two teams selected from the Central Region to compete in the NCAA Tournament go directly to the Round of 16 to play each other in essentially what is called the regional final, bypassing the first two rounds of the tournament which occur next week.

Below are the regional rankings for November 5.

CENTRAL Team Overall In-Region
1 Northeastern State 14-3-1 14-3-1
2 Fort Hays State 11-4-3 11-4-3
3 Lindenwood (Mo.) 9-6-3 9-6-3
4 Upper Iowa 8-5-2 8-5-1

Huelskamp: Kansas Vets to Receive their Choice Card Soon

Washington, DC – Today Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) announced that Kansas Veterans will soon receive the VA Veterans Choice Card, allowing eligible Veterans to receive medical care outside of the VA system. The Choice Card will arrive in Kansas mailboxes soon. The Veterans Choice Card provision advocated by Huelskamp was included in the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act, which passed into law in August.

Rep. Huelskamp issued the following statement:
“As a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee and a strong advocate for allowing Veterans to choose their doctor and their hospital, it is exciting to know that Kansas Veterans will soon receive their Choice Card in the mail. The Veteran Choice Card is something I have long advocated for during my time in Congress at countless VA committee hearings leading up to the drafting of this legislation. I am happy to see it is close to being a reality.
“After the failed rollout of ObamaCare a year ago, I will be watching the implementation of this law closely. Too many Veterans have already waited months for the care they need. Too many Veterans have been forced to drive hours to receive some of the most basic health care services. And too many Veterans have been restricted from picking their local hospital or doctor for their health care.
“Thousands of Kansas Veterans who live further than 40 miles from a VA facility— or those who have to wait more than 30 days for care— will soon be able to call their local doctor and get their healthcare needs met. If any Veteran encounters difficulties in the VA roll-out of this Choice Card, please contact my office. This Choice Card is a step in the right direction for improving medical care in the VA system— it is good for our Veterans, for their families, and for our local hospitals.”
