2014 was a great year for the Hays Public Library. Without patrons, the HPL would not be the library it is today. Our staff works hard to provide a welcoming environment for the entire community. We hope community members can keep utilizing our free programs and physical and online materials.

This year, there were over 167,000 items checked-out from the library–42,000 more items than last year.

Materials checked-out from the library include books for adults, young adults, and children. CDs, DVDs, blu-rays, video games and our downloadable books, audio, and videos are included in the check-out count. Patrons can electronically download free check-out materials using Sunflower eLibrary, hoopla, and more.

One of the newest changes to the library is the ability to check out new magazines. What was the most popular magazine for check-out in 2014? People Magazine averaged 20 check-outs each month.

Some of the most popular borrowed books in 2014 were adapted to the Big Screen. Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn, and The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green, are included on the list. Other popular books this year were as followed:
Unlucky 13 by James Patterson
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Top Secret Twenty-one by Janet Evanovich

One of the most consistently checked-out titles this year was the movie Nebraska. In 2014 Nebraska was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture.
