Ellis woman among MBA students with top scores on national exam

aerial_of_pickenFHSU UNIVERSITY RELATIONS

Seven Master of Business Administration students graduating this fall from Fort Hays State University will be ready for the challenges of a dynamic business environment, according to results from a national test.

Four of the graduates scored in the top 3 percent (the 97th percentile): David White, Wellington, Kaushik Venkatesh, Henderson, Nev., Misty Schartz, Ellis, and Jay Connelly, Norfolk, Neb.

Schartz, 26, was recovering from a major traffic accident in early September when her vehicle was hit by a semi as she drove to Hays.

Monica Taskinen, Salina, scored in the top 10 percent, and Amy Rose, Overland Park, and Clinton Westover, Vancouver, Wash., scored in the top 25 percent nationally on the Educational Testing Service’s Major Field Test (MFT). These scores place them among the top graduates in the nation.

FHSU administers the MFT in business to graduating MBA students each semester. The test was developed to assess the skills of graduating MBA students.

In addition to factual knowledge, the test evaluates the student’s ability to analyze and solve problems, understand relationships, and interpret material. It also provides an assessment of faculty teaching effectiveness and identifies areas of improvement in the MBA curriculum.

The test consists of 124 multiple-choice questions, half of which are based on short, case-study scenarios. Several skill sets are measured, including marketing, management, finance and managerial accounting. More than 130 colleges and universities in the United States administer this exam.

“These exit scores show that Fort Hays State University MBA graduates stand shoulder to shoulder with the best anywhere,” said Dr. Mark Bannister, dean of FHSU’s College of Business and Entrepreneurship. “These students’ achievements speak well of them and of our university’s Master’s of Business Administration program.”

Too many drinks? New cellphone app may tell you so

phone cell phoneAMANDA LEE MYERS, Associated Press

A new federally funded cellphone app allows people who may have had one too many to get an idea just how drunk they are.

On the Maryland app, users enter their sex, height, and weight, and number of drinks consumed to figure out their blood-alcohol content. Two interactive games test reaction time and cognitive agility. And it uses GPS technology to call cabs and preload phone numbers for potential designated drivers.

The app is called ENDUI, or “End DUI.” Government and state officials announced its launch Thursday.

The app is funded by federal money reserved for drunken-driving education efforts. It’s among several in a handful of states to tackle drunken driving. Maryland’s is one of the most elaborate.

The app was developed by the Maryland Highway Safety Office for about $50,000. It’s available for free on Android and iPhone.

Senate debates $1.1T bill; vote slips to next week

U S SenateANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — First, objections by House Democrats stood in the way of passage of a $1.1 trillion catchall spending bill. Now it’s the Senate Republicans’ turn, specifically Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah.

The two lawmakers demanded a vote Friday night on a proposal to cut funds from the bill that could be used to implement President Barack Obama’s new immigration policy, ending any chance the measure could clear the Senate and be sent to the White House with a minimum of fuss.

Officials in both parties said the bill remains on track for clearance early next week. But the move led Majority Leader Harry Reid to abandon plans to adjourn the Senate for the weekend, and pointed toward a test vote shortly after midnight on Saturday.

HUTCHINSON– A Kansas man was killed and a woman was injured in an accident just before 5 p.m. on Friday in Reno County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy Colorado driven by Leo Vern Krehbiel, 82, Pretty Prairie, was northbound on Kansas 14 and came to a stop at the Intersection of Kansas 96.

The vehicle failed to yield right of way and collided with a 2011 Ford Fusion driven by Mary Teresa Sobba, 44, Wichita, that was southbound on Kansas 14.

Krehbiel and Sobba were transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.  Krehbiel died Friday night.

The KHP reported both drivers were properly restrained at the time of accident.

DCF to delay computer upgrade as part of budget cuts

KHI News Service
TOPEKA — A spokesperson for the Kansas Department for Children and Families says the agency plans to heed Gov. Sam Brownback’s call for cutting $3.9 million from its fiscal year 2015 budget by delaying a planned upgrade of its computer system.

The savings should cover “almost all of our anticipated FY 2015 reduction,” DCF spokesperson Theresa Freed wrote in an email KHI News Service, referring to the state’s current fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2015.

Delaying the upgrade, she said, will have “no impact” on the department’s services for at-risk children and low-income families.

Freed said more information about the agency’s budget cuts would be available in a few weeks.

Earlier this week, Brownback announced that he was using his allotment powers to cut state agency spending and to sweep fee funds in an effort to plug a $280 million hole in this year’s budget.

The governor’s plan included taking $3.9 million from DCF’s $623 million budget and $6 million from the $1.5 billion Department for Aging and Disability Services budget.

Most of the reduction in KDADS spending will be achieved by delaying for a year the planned January 2015 opening of Meyer Hall, a nearly renovated building on the campus of Larned State Hospital, one of the state’s two hospitals for people with mental health issues.

The building is designed to house medically fragile patients in the state’s Sexual Predator Treatment Program.

“We believe we can delay occupancy of Meyer until January 2016 and still provide appropriate treatment to the medically infirm,” said KDADS spokesperson Angela de Rocha. The other new unit for the Sexual Predator Treatment Program at Larned is in operation, she said.

The governor’s proposed cuts and sweeps are needed to balance the state’s current fiscal year budget. An even larger gap — $436 million — looms in fiscal year 2016.

The gaps are driven by revenue shortfalls caused by cuts in income tax rates that have wiped out the state’s reserve funds.

Legislators will begin the process for rejecting, upholding or modifying the governor’s proposed sweeps and for crafting the next fiscal year’s budget when they reconvene in January.

Christmas tree shopping: Cost vs. convenience

Xmas treeHOLLY RAMER, Associated Press

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. (AP) — Some U.S. consumers are going over the Internet or through the woods to find fresh Christmas trees this year, taking advantage of shopping options at opposite ends of the cost spectrum.

In one camp are thrifty folks paying as little as $5 for trees they cut down themselves in national forests. In the other are consumers willing to spend upward of $100 to order trees online and have them shipped to their doors.

The National Christmas Tree Association says fewer than 3 percent of the 33 million fresh trees purchased last year were sold online but that number is growing. Meanwhile, the U.S. Forest Service sold 196,000 Christmas trees last year to consumers willing to hike into the forests and harvest them.

Girls:    TMP 47, Hill City 35

The TMP Lady Monarchs never trailed in their 47-35 win over Hill City on Friday night.  The Lady Monarchs built a 13 point first half lead that would dwindle to four points late in the third quarter.  TMP would recover and finish the game on a 15 to nine run to seal the win.  Megan Koenigsman led the way for TMP wit 15 points.  Lexi McDowell led Hill City with 15 as well.

The Lady Monarchs are now three and one on the season and will travel to Victoria on Tuesday.

Boys:  Hill City 49, TMP 47

Hill City held TMP to 14 points over the final 18 minutes of play on Friday night and picked up their first win on the season defeating the Monarchs, 49-47.  TMP led by 10 points with two minutes left in the first half and their offense win into early hibernation at that point.  Claiborn Kyles led Hill City with 20 points.  Jared Vitztum scored 18 for TMP.  14 of those points came in the first half.
