Traylor will not play for No. 10 KU vs Georgetown

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas forward Jamari Traylor has been suspended for Wednesday night’s game at Georgetown after he was arrested over the weekend for interfering with a police officer.

Coach Bill Self said Monday that Traylor would travel with the No. 10 Jayhawks but would not play against the Hoyas. He said that Traylor is “a good kid who made a bad choice” and that Self hopes the situation has been put behind him.

Traylor was arrested shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday near campus, the Douglas County Sherriff’s Office said. He posted $100 bond and was released. He is due in court Dec. 23.

Rodriguez Coleman, a backup wide receiver, also was arrested early Sunday, posted $100 bond and was released. New coach David Beaty said he was handling the matter internally.

DSNWK ends some services in Oakley, eliminates jobs to balance budget

dsnwk_logoDevelopmental Services of Northwest Kansas announced Monday it will be condensing services and reducing its presence in some northwestern Kansas communities.

The restructuring is an “effort to balance a deficit budget brought on by chronic underfunding of community services for many years coupled with rising costs,” according to a DSNWK news release.

Headquartered in Hays, DSNWK is a community-based service provider for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 18 northwest Kansas counties.

DSNWK recently announced to recipients of services in Oakley that day and residential services will soon be discontinued.  Day services will end December 31; residential support services will cease at the end of January, 2015.

DSNWK is working with affected individuals and their families on their options and assisting in the transition efforts. DSNWK has provided services in Oakley since 1993.

In Hill City, DSNWK will close one group home which serves six individuals. Those people will move to other locations with openings or offered alternative services.

Other changes occurring throughout DSNWK include eliminating positions and reducing employee hours in Hays, Norton and Russell. Freezing capital expenditures and reducing monthly expenses have also been implemented.

Earlier this fall DSNWK announced to individuals and their families the upcoming elimination of its agency-directed supported home care services.

“These changes have been some of the most difficult steps we have had to take–action brought on by the chronic under-funding of the community support system,” said DSNWK president Jerry Michaud in the news release.

“Our mission-driven effort to provide services and support has been relegated to reducing some of the core services and options developed to meet the real needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in northwest Kansas as well as their families.

According to Michaud, “DSNWK’s core funding–HCBS Waiver–has not seen a rate increase since 2008. That same year, because of funding shortages or cuts, DSNWK was forced to close its Colby location, consolidate residential service settings throughout the service area and eliminate many staff positions to remain fiscally balanced.

“Unfortunately, these changes made by DSNWK are very necessary and reflect the real effect of what funding cuts and inadequate funding rates do to the community service network across Kansas for persons with developmental disabilities. We appeal to our state legislators, the Governor and policy makers to recognize the damage taking place, halt actions that may cause further damage and address the flat rates and push for the long overdue adjustments needed to course-correct the downward path of these essential services,” said Michaud.

Chiefs’ Eric Berry diagnosed with cancer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs safety Eric Berry has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and will begin chemotherapy for what doctors called a “very treatable and potentially curable” form of cancer.

Hodgkin’s disease is a form of lymphoma originating in white blood cells.

Berry had been undergoing tests at Emory University in Atlanta since an MRI exam nearly two weeks ago showed a mass on the right side of his chest that was suspected to be lymphoma.

Berry said in a statement that he will “embrace this process and attack it the same way I do everything else in life. God has more than prepared me for it.”

The former All-Pro safety has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Bystanders come to aid of Kan. purse-snatching victim

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A 77-year-old woman whose purse was snatched in a grocery store parking lot has her belongings back after bystanders chased the man down.

Wichita police say the theft happened around 1:45 p.m. Sunday in a Dillons parking lot. The Wichita Eagle reports two men and a woman heard the victim’s protests and took off after the thief in separate vehicles.

At one point during the chase the woman got out of her vehicles and started running after the suspect, but stopped after he threatened to shoot her.

Police spokesman Lt. James Espinoza says the suspect later ran toward one of the men, who knocked him down and held him for police.

The 20-year-old suspect, who was unarmed, was arrested and the victim got her purse and keys back.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee says the release of a Senate report examining the use of torture by the CIA a decade ago will cause violence and deaths abroad.

Rep. Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican, is regularly briefed on intelligence analyses. He tells CNN’s “State of the Union” that the U.S. intelligence community has assessed that the release of the report will be used by extremists to incite violence. The 480-page report is expected to be made public next week. It is a summary of a 6,000 page secret study.

On Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry urged the senator in charge of the report to consider the timing of the release. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, has not responded.

Police: Kan. man put gun in baby seat next to daughter

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita police say a 20-year-old man has been arrested after placing a loaded, cocked gun in a car seat with his infant daughter.

The Wichita Eagle reports the man was arrested late Sunday night after he burst into a house and demanded at gunpoint to be given the girl.

Police say he “threatened to shoot everyone if he did not get his baby” and pointed the gun at several people inside the home to reinforce his threat.

Police say he put the baby in a car seat and placed his gun next to her and tried to leave. Officers were called to the scene and arrested him there.

The man was booked into Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated burglary and child endangerment.

Religious nonprofits challenge health law’s birth control mandate

courtKRISTEN WYATT, Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — A group of faith-based religious organizations that object to covering birth control in their employee health plans told a panel of federal judges that they should be treated like religions and not be required to even file papers saying they don’t want to cover contraceptives.

But a lawyer for the federal government said Monday that would require officials to set up sort of a “detective agency” to determine whether employers aren’t meeting health insurance mandates because of religious beliefs.

The cases before the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver are the latest challenge the birth-control mandate in the federal health care law.

The religious groups aren’t required to cover contraception. But they say a government requirement that they affirm their religious objection makes them complicit in providing the coverage.

KFIX Rock News: Study finds Led Zeppelin Has “Least Sophisticated” Song Lyrics

Led_Zeppelin_SwansongDid you ever listen to an Elton John song and think, “Wow, I wish I understood what he was singing about?”

If so, that may be because, according to a new study, the lyrics to the Rocket Man’s songs are among the most sophisticated of all British music stars.

The study, conducted by British tabloid The Mirror, reportedly used algorithms designed to measure the difficulty of school textbooks to analyze song lyrics by a wide range of acts, including The Beatles, David Bowie, Queen, Rod Stewart, The Who, Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac.

The study found that it requires 9.3 years of education to fully understand the words to Elton’s tunes.  It should be noted the lyrics to John’s songs aren’t written by Elton himself, but by his songwriting partners, including his frequent collaborator, Bernie Taupin.

The only British act with lyrics more sophisticated than John’s, says the newspaper, is ’80s New Wave act Depeche Mode, whose lyrics require 10.3 years of education to understand.  Also finishing in the top 10 of the tally are Dire Straits, Bowie, Stewart, Queen and Def Leppard.

On the other side of the spectrum, the study wasn’t too kind to Led Zeppelin. The band’s old blues lyrics, euphemisms for sex and references to mythical beings were deemed the least sophisticated of all the artists studied, notching an average readability score of only 4.4.

They shouldn’t feel too bad, though — The Beatles, The Who, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac and Paul McCartney as a solo artist also are listed among the 10 acts with the least sophisticated lyrics.

Here are the top 10 acts with the most sophisticated lyrics:

Depeche Mode — 10.3
Elton John — 9.3
Dire Straits — 9.2
The Pet Shop Boys — 9.1
David Bowie — 8.7
Rod Stewart — 8.7
Robbie Williams — 8.6
UB40 — 8.5
Queen — 8.5
Def Leppard — 8.5

And here are the top 10 acts with the least sophisticated lyrics:

Led Zeppelin — 4.4
The Who — 5.3
The Smiths — 5.5
The Beatles — 5.7
Jethro Tull — 6.1
Joy Division — 6.5
Fleetwood Mac — 6.5
The XX — 6.7
Paul McCartney (solo) — 6.7
Coldplay — 6.9
