Hays Mayor Henry Schwaller confirmed to Hays Post on Thursday night that he will run for another term on the Hays City Commission. Throughout his time on the commission, Schwaller has received two four-year terms and three two-year terms.

“I think there’s a lot that needs to be done in the city,” Schwaller said. “We have a number of big projects on the plate including our wastewater plant, which will be a $20 million project. It’s important that we have commissioners that know what questions to ask and know how to bring things in under budget.”

Schwaller currently serves as president of Henry Schwaller and Associates, a real estate investment firm in Hays, and serves as an instructor of management and marketing at Fort Hays State University. He is also a graduate of Leadership Kansas. He voted against the Community Improvement District at the Hays Mall and has a history of voting against issues that come in over budget or seem to raise the price of living in Hays.

Commissioners Ron Mellick and Kent Steward have yet to confirm their decisions. Commission applications are due to the county clerk by Jan. 27 and Election Day will be April 7. The top two candidates will receive a four year term and the third candidate will receive a two year term. Four seats on the Hays USD 489 school board will also be up for election.
