Bring a sturdy sack, advised Laurie Mortinger, co-director of the Community Assistance Center, as the year’s first surplus commodities distribution truck pulls into the Kansas National Guard Armory, 200 Main, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The federal program provides food for low-income individuals and families and makes stops in Hays four times a year.
“There are six items this time,” Mortinger said. “(People) just need to sign a paper saying they qualify and … bring a nice sturdy bag with them, and it takes about 5 minutes to go through the line.”
“We are glad to help people out if they can use some extra food,” she added.
The food items on the truck are corn, orange juice, mixed fruit, canned potatoes, peanut butter and grape juice.
Mortinger said the distribution truck will be back in Hays in two to three months.
Organizers will not ask for proof of income.
