WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today released the following statement responding to the President’s State of the Union Address:

“In the midterm elections, the American people sent the largest Republican Majority in nearly a century to Congress. With this new Republican majority came a clear message to President Obama:
“Kansans are tired of President Obama’s ‘go it alone’ liberal agenda. They want us to get things done.
“They are tired of the President’s executive orders, and they have had enough of the President’s proposals for more taxes, more spending, more government, and more bypassing of the Congress.
“President Obama could have, and should have, listened to this message from the last election, but instead, as we heard tonight, the President has turned a deaf ear to the will of the American people.
“He is taxing more, spending more and issuing more regulations.
“As the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture committee, I am particularly concerned with the President’s proposal to hike estate taxes that will hurt farmers and ranchers, requiring them to pay steep capital gains taxes on an asset they inherit, like family farmland. This does not help the next generation of farmers, or the rural economy. This proposal will never make it through the Congress.
“Kansans have my assurance that I will continue to fight the President’s liberal agenda we heard outlined tonight. I will promote constructive, conservative, and commonsense solutions to our nation’s problems, and I won’t be deterred by the President’s refusal to listen to the will of the American people.”
