The Kansas Department of Commerce has announced that 12 Kansas communities will share a total of $5,638,901 in federal grants for water and sewer projects through the Community Development Block Grant program.

“We are excited to announce the awarding of CDBG funds to these very deserving Kansas communities,” said Commerce Secretary Pat George. “The CDBG program helps Commerce assist the small and rural communities that are so important to our state.”

The CDBG program provides federal funds to local governments for the development of viable communities by addressing their housing, public facilities and economic development needs. To be awarded funds, local government units must meet at least one of three program objectives: benefit to low and moderate-income persons, prevent or eliminate slums and blight, or resolve an urgent need where local resources are not available to do so.

CDBG funds are one of the Department’s primary tools in supporting the state’s small, predominantly rural communities. The Department has distributed more than $450 million in CDBG funding in the last decade.

The following northwest Kansas communities have been awarded CDBG grants for water and sewer projects:

City of Herndon in Rawlins County, $326,325
This project will replace water lines throughout the city. KDHE and the city will jointly provide $326,325 in matching funds.

City of Plainville in Rooks County, $500,000
The project will improve the waste water treatment ponds that serve the city. The city and KDHE will provide $1,233,179 in matching funds.
