One in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. That’s one billion women. Fourteen million girls under 18 will be married this year. That’s 38 thousand today – or 13 girls in the last 30 seconds (UNFPA, 2012). Two-thirds of the 792 million illiterate adults in the world are female (EFA Global Monitoring Report, 2012).

On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Fort Hays State University will spread awareness of these issues and rise for the justice of these women and girls. One Billion Rising is an international dance movement that takes place in 88 different countries and countless cities. This is the second year that Hays has been added to the list of global participants.

The community is encouraged to join us the evening of Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. as we shake the community into awareness. The event will be held in Beach-Schmidt Auditorium. Enjoy performances by the TigerDebs and local dance studios. You have the opportunity to be part of a global movement that is changing the way girls and women are treated, one person at a time. Join us as we rise for justice.
