The Hays area received a record-setting dose of summer in the middle of winter on Thursday.
The official high temperature of 86 shattered records, according to statistics from the K-State Ag Research Center.
The previous high in Jan. 27 was in 1934 when the mercury hit 70 degrees. Tuesday also matched the all-time high for the month of January. In 1989, the thermometer also hit 86, but not until Jan. 31, said Joe Becker of K-State Extension.
Wednesday’s high temperature should approach yet another record, with highs in the low- to mid-70s expected in the early afternoon. The record high for Jan. 28 in 74, reached in 2013.
