SALINA – Law enforcement authorities in Salina reported finding a hand-made weapon during a random search of a cellblock in the Saline County Jail.

Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said the weapon was found on Wednesday under the mattress of an inmate. It was made from a toilet brush that is used by inmates to clean their areas everyday.

According to the Sheriff, the cleaning materials left for the inmates include a broom, mop bucket, mop, and the toilet brush.

Kochanowski said staff did not account for the brush when gathering the items to be put in storage.

It’s not known how long the inmate had been working on the weapon.

The Sheriff said it has not been determined if the inmate will be charged or just face jail discipline.

As of Thursday morning Saline County Jail inmate population was 228.
