If it had came in a loss, the scoring record that Brady Werth set Friday night, may not have been as sweet. Fortunately for Hays High, they don’t have to worry about that scenario as the Indians beat Dodge City 60-53.
Neither team could game separation over the first quarter as Hays led 15-14 after the first eight minutes. Dodge City took a 20-18 lead with 5:45 remaining in the second, but wouldn’t score for the next five minutes. The Indians defense led to a 14-0 run that was started with a Werth two handed dunk to tie the game. Hays led 32-22 at half time to gain the advantage they would need rest of the game.
Highlights
Hays pushed their lead to 13 on several occasions but couldn’t shake the Red Devils. Dodge City used a 13-5 run to get with six late in the third quarter. Leading 46-38 into the fourth, Hays would make just one fourth quarter field goal, but connect on 12 of 16 free throw chances. Dodge City closed the game on a 9-3 run over the final two minutes to make the final score 60-53 in favor of the Indians.

Hays High had two in double figures. Drew Young came off the bench to score 10. Brady Werth scored a game high 24 and collected 12 rebounds. In doing so, Werth set the career scoring record at Hays High School. With 1034 points, he passed Matt Stramel who had held the record at 1025. During his run to the scoring record, Werth has posted 52 double figure performances and had 20 points or more on 12 occasions. Werth also passed Matt Stramel in career rebounding for third place and is 30 rebounds from setting a new record there as well.
Hays is now 10-3 on the year and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. Dodge City falls to 5-7, 1-2.
Hays is back in action Tuesday when they travel to Salina South.
