KFIX Rock News: Jimmy Page Defends Led Zeppelin’s Excesses

Led_Zeppelin_SwansongLONDON (AP) – Led Zeppelin in their heyday needed a bit of extravagance, according to Jimmy Page.

He says they got a reputation for excesses like private planes, but that had a practical side.

Page says they would base themselves out of New York and fly to the surrounding cities for concerts.

He says they’d play five nights a week and three hours a night, so with that schedule a private plane didn’t seem so excessive to them.

The deluxe edition of Led Zeppelin’s “Physical Graffiti” album comes out Tuesday, 40 years to the day since its original release.

Yahoo Live will stream the deluxe album today at 2 PM Eastern, and Page will answer questions from fans afterward.

DeBakey sponsors 15th annual free CPR training

hays med logo

Hays Medical Center

It may take only a few minutes, but for the victim of sudden cardiac arrest, it can be the event of a lifetime.

Sudden cardiac arrest strikes about 250,000 adults in the United States annually. More than 95 percent of its victims die before reaching a hospital – many because they don’t receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation in time. Defibrillation is a process in which an electronic device gives an electric shock to the heart to help restore the heart’s normal rhythm.

To help improve those odds, the Michael E. DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed and the Hays Medical Center Foundation will hold its 15th annual Staying Alive Hands Only CPR Training on Saturday, February 28, at the Center for Health Improvement at Hays Medical Center.

During the day, the Institute hopes to train over 200 people for free in its Family and Friends CPR course. The one and one half hour class is designed for members of the general public, eight years and older; and is not for those seeking professional certification.  More than 30 certified instructors and volunteers will donate their time to the event.

Classes in adult and pediatric CPR will be offered at 9:00 am and 11:00 am.  To register, call (800) 248-0073, ext 5500 or (785) 623-5500 or go to www.haysmed.com/cprtraining.

“If more people know how to perform CPR, it naturally increases the probability that victims of cardiac arrest would receive CPR more timely—when it can still make a difference,” said Bryce Young, Vice President of Operations at Hays Medical Center.

When performed immediately, CPR may double a cardiac arrest victim’s chances of survival by adding critical minutes to a patient’s life. With CPR, breathing and chest compressions circulate oxygenated blood to the brain, heart and other vital organs until defibrillation is performed.

Cardiac arrest survival is directly linked to the amount of time between the onset of sudden cardiac arrest and defibrillation. Chances of survival drop 7 percent to 10 percent with every minute of delay. Brain death starts to occur in just four to six minutes

Seventy-five to 80 percent of all sudden cardiac arrests happen at home, so knowing how to perform can mean the difference between life and death for a loved one, according to the American Heart Association.

Farm and Ranch Succession Conference scheduled in Hays

Are multiple generations working together in the farm or ranch operation? Is the next generation interested in continuing the operation? A good succession plan incorporates the ideas and values of multiple family members, leading to a firmer future and smoother transition of the farm or ranch.

A one-day succession conference in Hays on March 3rd at the K-State Agricultural Research Center will explore the concerns involved in creating a good succession plan.

The daylong conference begins at 9 a.m. and ends at approximately 4:30 p.m. Meals and snacks are included. More information, including online registration, is available at k-state.edu/kams/succession, or by calling (800) 432-8222. The cost at each location is $60 for the first family member and $40 per person for each additional family member.

Pre-registration is requested by Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Succession planning is much more than an estate plan. It is preparing and leading the next generation to successfully manage the farm in addition to the assets that may be passed down. How does one go about creating a succession plan that incorporates not only the legal and financial obligations, but the leadership, values, communications and goals for the operation?

Experienced professionals from K-State Research and Extension and Kansas Agricultural Mediation Services will guide families through topics essential to succession planning. Information on family dynamics, business entities, power transfer and financial and legal concerns will help attendees prepare for their first and subsequent succession planning meetings.
