Margaret M. ‘Margie’ Bollig

Margaret M. “Margie” Bollig, 87, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born June 15, 1927 on the family farm South of Quinter, Kansas the daughter of William “Bill” and Bertha (Linenberger) Fahey. On June 24, 1947 she married Norbert Joseph Bollig in Ellis, Kansas. He died February 7, 2015.

She was a graduate of Quinter High School and graduated from Business College in Denver, CO. She worked at Travenol until their closing and was the State secretary-treasurer for the VFW Auxiliary.

She did bookwork for Hays Meal Site and Meals on Wheels for many years. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays and the Hays VFW Auxiliary. She was very active in the American Legion and VFW. She was an avid bingo player, loved reading, crocheting, golf, dancing and square dancing, polkas, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Robert “Bob” Bollig and wife JoAnn of Fairfax, Virginia, Mick Bollig and wife Suzanne of Hays, and Keith Bollig and wife Jennifer of Chicago, IL, three daughters, Sharon Pfeifer and husband Ken of Phoenix, AZ, Glenda Pfaff and husband Randy of Russell, and Rhonda Baker and husband Lyle of Hays, three brothers, Herbert Fahey and wife Barbara of Arvada, CO, Eugene Fahey of Henderson, CO, and Ron Fahey and wife Amy Finch of Green Valley, AZ, an uncle Eli Boucher of Kansas City, a daughter in law Josie Gallegos of Ft. Collins, CO, fifteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Dennis Bollig, five brothers, Dave, Leo, Leonard, Pat, and Jerry Fahey, a sister Patty Gerstner, and a granddaughter Erica Rae Bollig.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A VFW Auxiliary rosary will be at 6:00 followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30, both on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ellen Elizabeth Dreiling, 92, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center.

She was born February 23, 1923 in Victoria, Kansas the daughter of Joseph J. and Marianna (Dreiling) Linenberger. She married Vincent Dreiling in 1946 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria and they celebrated nearly 70 years of marriage.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, cooking, reading and traveling. She lovingly sewed a handmade quilt for each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren when they were born.

Survivors include her husband Vincent, Hays, eight children Firma Carrithers and husband Jim of Windom, KS, Diane Long and husband Mike of McKinney, TX, James Dreiling and wife Paula of Quakertown, PA, Marlene Taxter and husband Mike of Plano, TX, Dean Dreiling, Joe Dreiling, and Geralyn Dreiling, all of Hays and Anthony Dreiling and wife Cindy of Tecumseh, Kansas, one sister Leona Turner of Augusta, Kansas, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Ludwig, Otto, and Paul, seven sisters Regina, Bertha, Philomena, Hilda, Lucia, Margaret, and Ida, and a granddaughter Jami.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Monday and from 1:00 pm until service time on Tuesday, all at the funeral home.

Delores Mermis Hoffman

Delores Mermis Hoffman, 84, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, Kansas.

She was born October 7, 1930 in Hays the daughter of Frank C. and Bernadine (Leiker) Mermis. On December 16, 1950 she married Ralph J. Hoffman in Leesville, Louisiana. He died February 13, 2000. She was a homemaker and religion teacher for many years. She enjoyed camping, RV travelling, and she loved her brothers and sisters and family deeply.

Survivors include a son Mark Hoffman of Milpitas, CA, two brothers Frank Mermis II and wife Shirley of Olathe, and William “Bill” Mermis and wife Betty Jean of Overland Park, a sister Alice Munsch Herrman and husband Mike of Schoenchen, three grandchildren Apryl Winston, Kristen Hoffman, and Steven Hoffman, two great grandchildren Brianna and Ariana, brothers in law James Hoffman and wife Vera, Melvin Schmidt, and Alex Leiker, and sisters in law Lillian Hoffman Pfeifer, Rosie Mermis and Mary Ann Mermis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son David Hoffman, a daughter Barbara Jean Winston, three brothers Cecil F. Mermis and wife Dorothy, Vernon J. Mermis, and Gerald L. Mermis, three sisters Lillian Arnhold and husband Daniel, Mary Ellen Schmidt, and Betty L. Leiker, and a brother in law Al Pfeifer.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will be at a later date next to her husband in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Fremont, California. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Brownback faces jeers at Shocker-Jayhawk faceoff

During a break in the game between Kansas University and Wichita State University on Sunday, the camera zoomed in on Gov. Sam Brownback, seen wearing a shirt with both teams on it.

While the camera was on him, a booing could be audibly heard from those at the game on national television. Watch below.

Kansas, Nebraska firefighters battle blaze at hog operation

FireREYNOLDS, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters from several departments in Nebraska and Kansas have battled a fire at a hog operation in southern Nebraska.

The fire was first reported around 7 p.m. Sunday at the Livingston Enterprises operation, which sits about four miles southeast of Reynolds. No injuries were reported workers or firefighters. Fire officials say six buildings were damaged and several animals were killed.

Containment was reported by 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

The fire cause is being investigated.

Deer seasons to be set at March 26 KWPT Commission meeting

hunterPRATT– Deer, antelope, and elk hunting seasons for 2015-2016 will be determined when the Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Commission meets on March 26. The meeting will be held at the Kansas Museum of History, 6425 SW 6th Ave., Topeka.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. with time for public comments on non-agenda items, followed by a general discussion period. Topics covered in the general discussion include Secretary’s remarks regarding agency and state fiscal status; an update on the 2015 legislative session; a briefing of the department strategic plan; an update on tourism division activities; a preview of the new department website; webless migratory birds, early migrant bird seasons; and the Fort Riley deer season.

Workshop topics for the afternoon session, which will be discussed for potential regulatory action at a future meeting, include public land regulations.

The commission will recess at 5 p.m., then reconvene at 6:30 p.m. at the same location to discuss any remaining workshop items and begin the public hearing. Public hearing items to be discussed and voted on during the evening session include season dates, bag limits, and permit requirements for antelope, elk, and deer. Secretary’s Orders for deer permits will also be discussed.

Time will be available in both the afternoon and evening sessions for public comment on non-agenda items. If necessary, the commission will reconvene at the same location at 9 a.m., March 27, to complete any unfinished business.

Aldean calls it “the best day ever.” Kerr says she feels like the luckiest woman to have been able to marry her best friend. Aldean made tabloid headlines when he admitted to acting inappropriately with Kerr while still married to his first wife, Jessica.

Kansas Supreme Court to consider convicted killer’s appeal

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court is considering the appeal of a convicted serial killer who stuffed the bodies of several victims into barrels.

John E. Robinson, of Olathe, was convicted and sentenced to die in 2003 in Kansas for the deaths of 27-year-old Suzette Trouten, of Newport, Michigan, and 21-year-old Izabela Lewicka, of West Lafayette, Indiana.

He also received a life sentence in Kansas for the murder of a third woman, whose body was never found, and received life in prison in Missouri after pleading guilty to five other murders.

Robinson is raising dozens of issues on appeal, including the denial of numerous motions to suppress evidence. Oral arguments will get underway at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Kansas woman hospitalized after car overturns

CLAY CENTER- A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 5 p.m. on Sunday in Clay County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Chevy Malibu driven by Trish A. Svoboda, 31, Clay Center, was southbound on Kansas 15 eight miles north of Clay Center.

The vehicle went off the roadway to the west. The driver overcorrected. The vehicle entered the west ditch and overturned.

Svoboda was transported to Clay Center Medical Center.

The KHP reported she was properly restrained at the time of the accident.

Olathe police arrest man in connection with suspicious death

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — Olathe police say they have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with a suspicious death.

Officers were dispatched on Saturday night and found a man dead from a single gunshot wound at an Olathe residence. Police didn’t name the victim, whose death is being investigated as a homicide. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Authorities also didn’t identify the man who was arrested Sunday.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Olathe Police Department.
